There isn't one

What is wrong with using an extension - that is the whole idea

If you've already searched this board and found nothing to your liking you should make an extension request, otherwise post in custom coding someone may help you.

You will have even more bad experiences updating your boards if you start changing core code in preference to using extensions

Or are you talking about Mods? PhpBB 3.2 has extensions. Makes updating way easyer.

You don't need a extension for this.
Just setup a group avatar and it is OK.

ok, I'll bite, what group are you going to use for this? you can't use the guest group because if someone is registered then they would not be in the guest group. you can't use the registered usergroup because they either will or won't choose an avatar.

I think maybe you are thinking about something other than what the OP asked for.

It is working on my board for more then 5 years.
I have a standard avatar for the new registered and the registered users.

And if the users choose there own avatar then that one is showing up in there profile.
I think that is what the OP wants?
