permissions question

Post by Jesper Møller »

I'm having a problem with permissions

in my new forum i have made a test person
He is automatekly a member of the new user groupe
The New use groupe CANT edit there profile
When i ad him to the editor groupe and make that his standard groupe he stil can't edit his profile even that the permission for that groupe says CAN edit profile

I have to delete him from the start groupe before he can edit

What do i do wrong ??

I like that member can't edit there profile right away but when the exit the new user groupe and enter the registrade user they shud be able to do that

if you are using the newly registered user group then that means that they have to have some number of posts approved before they move out of that group.

that is probably why they can't edit the profile yet.

or, you don't have the permissions set the way you think.

everyone is always in the registered user group.

you can be in any number of other groups as well.
permissions are a little tricky to get the hang of but this should help:

Wont a permission from e.g. global editor overrule other permissions?

What is a "global editor"? (since you mention overruling other permissions - would that be a global moderator?)
You also mention an "editor group".
These are not default phpBB groups or user types and as such give no information concerning the permissions.

Also "standard group" is just a cosmetic feature and doesn't change the permissions of the user.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Regardless of what groups someone is in, if any one of them has a permission set to NEVER, they cannot do that action.

NEVER >> YES >> NO is the permission hierarchy, regardless of group, status, rank, whatever.

If you're not sure of why someone can or can't do something, look them up in the permission masks and it'll show you a full path of their groups and their permissions so you can see where they are being blocked.

You are best-off manually removing users from the Newly Reg'd Users group once you know and trust them. That will eliminate the "Never" permissions defined by that group.

The idea is that the Newly Registered Users are the ones who have not proven they are not spammers.
If you let them edit their profiles, they can fill them with spam or porn.

Once your new users have passed the New User Post Limit they are automatically removed from the Newly Reg'd Users group, and the restrictions are removed. I was saying that you can also remove them from that group manually, if you know they are not spammers.

Wont setting it to NO instead of NEVER do the sam trick ?? (allowing it to happen automatecly after e.g. 5 approved post when going from new user group)

Imagen a forum for weight loss where the members set there weight and bmi in the profile and edit this regulary

i have never seen spam in the profile ? But thanks for the headsup

Your new users are members of both the Registered Users (which have "YES" for edit profile) and the Newly Reg'D Users (which have "NEVER").
The "Never" permission blocks the "Yes" permission until the user is removed from the Newly Reg'd Users group.

No, because Newly Registered users are also members of the Registered Users group (as every member is), and the YES wil override the NO, but not the NEVER.

edit: pff, beaten by Brf's whisker ;)

I think you still misunderstand. if you change it to no for the NRU group then the YES in the RU group will take affect and they will be able to edit the profile even though they have a no from the NRU group.

leave it alone and it will do exactly what you want it to do.

once the NRU group member reaches the number of posts that you set they will be removed from the NRU and left in the RU and will be able to edit their profile.
