Doubts about polls

Post by Tarantino » Sun Jul 07, 2019 4:03 pm

Hi there, I've some doubts about polls.

I beleive that if I add a new option or remove an option the poll will be reseted, right?

My doubts is, and if I edit an option instead of adding, removing, will the poll be reseted?
And what if I only edit the topic title, will it reset the poll?

Is there an extension for bypass this?

It only takes a minute to test it out.

Try a search. Can't say I've ever seen one.

The only people who could edit the options would be the forum mods so you'd have to have a pretty dishonest bunch working for you if the edited the answers.

Adding or deleting an option will reset the poll.
Editing an option or editing the topic title does not reset the poll.

I doubt an extension changing this behaviour exists, basically I think this behaviour is correct, but for the option-editing which could actually result in someone having voted for an option they would never have chosen.

I have to admit though that I have only tested this behaviour with a poll I just made (and not with multiple members having voted). In other words the one who changed the poll is (in this case) the only one who voted (and therefore can change options and votes without falsifying the result).
A bit busy right now but I'll make a couple of users and have them vote a bit and then do some edits and report on the result.

Added later after some more thorough testing: Editing an option or editing the topictitle (as the user who created the poll), after other users have voted, does NOT reset the poll, not even when I edit the option another user has already voted for.

And more info added after even more testing:
I can't find a specific permission for editing polls. A poll is a special kind of topic, and in order to create one, the permission "can add poll" has to be set. In order to edit the poll, the permission "can edit posts" has to be set (I haven't been able to test this last statement in all configurations yet but it seems that way.

On my board(s), all polls are in a specific subforum and only I have the necessary permissions there - so it's actually pretty simple to prevent polls being edited (a founder can always just about do anything so as a founder, make sure noone can do any editing where they shouldn't be able to.)

There is the Advanced Polls extension - but I am not sure how it handles this situation.

Thanks, I'll let the TS do the research on that one. I've had it with polls for today ;) (see the edit to my previous post)

Thanks for all. And what about dates, if the poll doesnt have a date and some days later I add one, will it reset it?

In my case its necessary time to time to add more options, and sometimes even remove options. Its the only way to have a good poll with true results.
Its like a poll for let say better forums systems. A poll with 3 years and today I would add let say Flarum and Discourse, and people can change their votes, so it would be the only way to keep everybody votes and still add new players and see how the poll is changing. For me its the only way for many cases to have a good poll. Ofcourse there are some cases where this is a no-no, but it always depends the poll creator needs, thats why I think it should exist an extension to make this possible. For what I check I didnt found anything.

But that would only be an accurate poll if all of the people who had already voted were aware of the new options and had the chance to vote again. Unlikely on the majority of forums where the population is highly transient. That's why the results get reset when a new option is added. It's the only way it can be a fair vote.

I don't share the same opinion. There is more then one kind of poll.

Logically, there's no need for the poll to be reset in that case.
If you haven't entered a date (actually AFAIR you don't input a date but the number of days the poll is open for voting), so If you didn't edit the number of days, then the poll will be open 'till hell freezes over. And editing the number of days will just define the end-date, so you'll either define the end-date (in the future) or effectively close the poll (since the poll has reached its end-date).
My test poll was deleted yesterday so I didn't test this but I'm quite confident I'm right about this.

added: I had another poll and tested on that: my reasoning is correct 8-)

I did actually raise this as a "bug" a couple of years ago and was told that it was "intended behaviour". Perhaps it should be an option to delete/retain when there is a change - Ideas forum?

The Advanced Polls extension does not have the ability to add/remove the options without the reset, by now. My idea is to create a second ACP panel for that extension, that would be restricted to admins and mods. There the options of a poll could be edited and also reordered with a form similar to the forums manager. The trick is to reassign the votes in the forum database after the change. About the problem of modifying a poll after some users have voted, maybe a private message sent to them could be a solution.

Moderators cannot access the ACP.

Sorry, I was thinking on a moderator with some admin roles activated, that is, an admin with just the access to that ACP panel.

That is an administrator, just like an administrator without a single moderator permission is no moderator.
