Any update on PHP 7.3 support?

Post by koraldon »

Hi,
Didn't follow phpbb dev for the last few months, any update on 7.3 support?
I just saw an alpha for 7.4 and that 7.2. will no longer get active support in a few months.

Where did you get your information from?

I wouldn't call 1 year and 4 months of remaining support for PHP 7.2 "a few months". The cutoff is November 30, 2020. That's still plenty of time.

It clearly states in the link you provided that Active support for php 7.2 ends 30 Nov 2019... So 4 months away. Security Support however ends 30 Nov 2020 - there is a difference between the two.

Considering the time it takes to release a new major version of phpbb: Beta->RC->Gold, four months is not a lot of time, I think that for 3.2 release it took a year or so from beta to gold (feb. 2016->Jan 2017).
It actually means that it is likely that no activley supported version of PHP will work on phpBB by year's end.

What are you expecting to get from PHP 7.3, what’s the rush?

It's because 7.3 came out after 3.2.6 (which was almost immediately followed by .7).

To help inform you, support means it is supported. Security updates include security updates only. So long as PHP 7.2 is supported until 30 Nov 2020, it is supported. I hope that clears up your confusion, WelshPaul. Bug fixes will not be covered beyond 30 Nov 2019, but as long as it is secure, it won't matter as much since developers have had plenty of time to merge their software over to PHP 7.3. By the 30 Nov 2020 point, I bet phpBB 3.3 will be considered Gold.

Did you read what you wrote?
7.2 support ends on November 2019
That’s the facts.
Security maintenance is not active support. It means all bugs will not be fixed even if they make the program unstable.
It is not recommended to be on unsupported versions.

~Nov 2020 ? I hope it's a joke

My new dedicated is running deb10 and I do not want to get php 7.2 from a third-party repository...
After that, don't tell me the dev's are security concerned.

Apparently you didn't read what I wrote. Security support is still support, and PHP 7.2 will get supported until 30 Nov 2020 as I have stated. That is simply a fact. Here it states that for your reference once again:

https://www.php.net/supported-versions.php
A release that is supported for critical security issues only. Releases are only made on an as-needed basis.
I'm not denying other bugs will not get patched, nor did I state that they would be, because they won't. Stating that I am implying that is a poor attempt at trying to put words in my mouth. No one can deny that 30 Nov 2020 is the deadline for which PHP 7.2 support ends. I hope that clears up your confusion.

To answer the question about why the rush to upgrade, apart from the fact bug support for 7.2 ends in a week:

- many hosting services will likely remove 7.2 support and indeed some have already done so, as a few recent support topics have indicated. This doesn't affect me as i have a self-managed server, but it will likely affect many smaller boards on managed and shared hosts.

- performance benchmarking has shown that php 7.3 is 20% faster than 7.2., which in turn was slightly faster than 7.1. If moving from php 5.6 to 7.3 it is up to a 300% speed increase with opcache enabled.

- phpBB 3.3.x will also bring support for php 7.4, which is another step in support for mySQL 8.0> which in turn brings a number of security and performance benefits and will help ensure future-proofing.

But definitely not all by a long shot, my host still offers PHP 5.6 and goes up to 7.3.
