Which one is more accurate?

Post by 2600 »

If you go here which one is more accurate? For me it looks like the second one from ipinfo.io.

ipinfo.io for me too, but even that is quite a few miles out - unlike the others that are hundreds of miles out.

I have a felling ipinfo.io will be more accurate since it says the API is in real time.

That happens when your organization has offices in several cities, but all their internet access is not local. No third party service is able to know that - only by chance.

The third one is guessing.

I am in central texas
the first one puts me in colorado
ipinfo.io is dallas ;about 200 miles off
the last one puts me in abilene texas which is also 200 miles away

I have never had any IP finder get within 50 miles of the town I live in.

this is one reason why I am always asking people what they think they can find via a IP address.

even if you have a static IP it is very rare that anyone can track you down to your actual location.
you can find out who the ISP is and if you have a court order you may be able to track the user to the actual address where they were at the time
they used that IP address.
you can't believe all that nonsense on tv.

Both are similarly accurate one is ~50km off to the north the other one is ~50km off to the south.

So it looks like varying results. For me the second one has my town correct.

First and second are reasonably close, third is 50 km out.

The second one apparently uses real time info from the provider and will probably be closest for most cases. (this depends on what the provider gives as information.
The first and third use a database (the origin of which is unclear) which seems to be a version near the beginning of the month, so the later in the month, the higher the probability that it won't be (near) correct.

In my case, they're all pretty accurate. All three are accuratly displaying the state and town I'm in.

Second and third happened to be "accurate" for me, by being just one adjoining city away from my actual city.

"Realtime" in this case means iplocation.net is querying against ipinfo.io's API, and not any kind of "database product" like with the other options. This doesn't imply anything about the accuracy of the information, but just the manner in which iplocation.net is obtaining it. The database ipinfo.io is using at their end to answer the API calls could actually be older than either of the other two sources listed at any given moment.

I do happen to use ipinfo.io when displaying connections to our game server, but mainly based on convenience of the API.

(Standard caveats about how IP geolocation never intends to identify the location of the actual user; only at best the general region or city, if that. Cases where it's "dead-on accurate" from the user's perspective are usually just sheer coincidence when a particular ISP regional office or router just happens to be located in the same city that the user is also in.)

nope , not me. I have never had satellite and wouldn't have it.
currently I am using a att mobile plan because the att uverse I had became totally unreliable.

I am on the very end of where the uverse interent is available ( no uverse tv at all out here ).
my problem is that what I have is supposed to be 4gLTE and it is onlly 3g and goes down for a short while often.
there are now two wireless providers ( not cell providers like I have now ) out here and I am getting ready to switch to one of them. should be able to get 10Mb down from
them. currently I am lucky to be getting 5 down.
