Style is not updating (SE Square Left)

Post by Kieria »

Hello! Hope you all are doing great. I am currently facing some issues with updating one of the styles. I recently switched from php-fusion to phpbb so apologize if some questions sounds stupid, I am still learning phpbb. For the past days I have been trying to edit SE Square Left (https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styl ... uare_left/) theme, which I downloaded from here.

Basically what I have been trying to do is: change logo, change forum icons, change colours, background, text font. I really like the theme but I'd like to make some cosmetic adjustments. Unless, we are not allowed to? Either way, can please someone shed a light on me what I am doing wrong? I did read most of the topics over here with the similar issue. I have set 'Recompile stale style components' to Yes. I have purged the cache as well. Shall I edit files from prosilver then since SE Square Left theme inherits from it? I would appreciate any help as I am about to give up on phpbb :(

Thank you in advance

Styles released on phpBB can be adjusted to your needs as much as you want. And you'll still get basic support.

Use your browser style editor tools to edit the style and see the results in real time. You'll know exactly which file you're editing an can even save and download the changes.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

if you notice there are only two template files in that style. therefore, if you need to edit any files other than those two you need to copy the ones from prosilver and put them in your se quare template folder and edit them.

only use a real text editor like notepad++ or editpad lite. make your changes, upload back to the server to the se square folder and refresh your browser to see the changes.

if you are making css changes then you don't need to worry about editing the prosilver files as se square comes with the css files you need to edit

Do you mean by using Inspect element? I have tried to use and see which file I need to adjust, but as soon as I make adjustments and reupload using FTP, nothing changes. Unless I need to change setting in every single file that stylesheet lists..

phpBB is a bit weird in that the CSS is chopped up into all sorts of "helpful" files, so depending on what you want to do you may indeed have to edit several files to change one element. Or, you can just load custom code last to override the earlier stuff if you can't be bothered digging through all of it.

I assume you've been through the standard "my brain isn't working this morning" checklist:
1/ Are you uploading from and to the right directories (ie: not backup or test ones)
2/ Are the overwrites actually working (FTP can miss them at times).
3/ Clearing browser cache after changes.

It should work. I've recently jumped into phpBB myself, and generally it works much like any other forum app in terms of styling.

Apologies for the late reply, and for the lack of information in my earlier post (I was rushing to leave the house).
My statement was basically a copy/rephrasing of a statement I had read somewhere, but is not a correct representation of what I do.
The style editor does not in fact allow you to edit the originating base files (that wouldn't be logical anyway) but it does show you how and where effect is created and it allows editing the end-result (meaning in your browser cache).
In this sense it shows you which file(s) to edit.
What I do it to use the style editor to test a change + identify which file should be edited and where. I have the files open in edit mode while I test changes and immediately apply the edits and save (if I'm pleased with the result).

Reupload these changed files or refreshing the browser page) will probably only have effect after purging the cache .
