Post by Tastenplayer »

Name of the style: ProsilverColor-blinds
Style Version: 3.2.9
phpBB Version: 3.2.9
Based on: prosilver
---
index_prosilver_color-blinds.jpg
---
Description of the style:
It's an ordinary prosilver, but without colors.
* Round icons for read and square icons for unread incl. the subforums (The unread icons based on Square imageset by EvangelionI)
* Background behind the usernames
I hope that everything else is well distinguishable for colorblinds.

Important: With this style prosilver, the respective phpbb version, must be installed!

DEMODOWNLOAD

FACT: 1 out of 255 women and 1 out of 12 men have some form of color vision deficiency.
Color weaknesses are mostly congenital, but diseases or side effects of drugs can also affect the recognition of colors. Total colour blindness, on the other hand, is much rarer - one in every 100,000 people is affected.

GEO - How colour-blind people see the world (Article on DE but look at the pictures at the end. Use the slider and drag it from left to right to see the difference in each shot.)
Translation for the shown pictures:
Protanopia
In red blindness (protanopia) patients are not able to process red light. They therefore have difficulty distinguishing between red and green and between blue and green. In red blindness, the cones, the sensory cells of the retina, which are responsible for seeing red tones, are damaged.

Deuteranopia
People who suffer from green blindness (deuteranopia) cannot process a green light. There are no cones, i.e. the sensory cells of the eye, so that green tones cannot be perceived. It is therefore more difficult for people with a green blindness to distinguish green from red and between some grey, purple and blue shades.

Tritanopia
In people suffering from blue blindness (tritanopia), the light-sensitive photoreceptors for recognizing blue tones on the retina of the eye are not developed. As a result, they often confuse light blue with grey, dark purple with black, medium green with blue and orange with red. They cannot process blue light.

Yes it is interesting when you start taking vision impairment into account. I haven't done a thorough check, but I suspect a lot of styles wouldn't meet WebAIM guidelines everywhere. I suspect this even applies to some elements of the default Prosilver.

But on the other hand I remember reading about dyslexia some time back. It's more common than the various forms of colour blindness, and one interesting thing about it is that people with dyslexia have great difficulty reading high contrast pages. They often describe it in terms like "text crawling all over the page". If you use lower contrast levels, suddenly dyslexic people become less dyslexic. So if you make a style which meets or exceeds WCAG AAA standards it will also be making things harder for a much larger group of users.

Then you have people who get migraines from light styles. I've known some of them too. If you want to cater for everyone you really need three or four styles.

You're absolutely right about that.
- One should be able to recognize at least the new contributions.
- colorless gives at least already times no problems with any colors.
- For me personally, the wrap should be darker, makes me problems (eye flicker with time) but then the style looks even "leaner" :-). As a low-contrast style you would definitely have to do that. Inside it is darker and it should work. Which is the main thing. Only with the background of the dropdowns there could be problems concerning readability. But to know that exactly, first of all a Legasteniker would have to give feedback. Probably the font would have to be bigger for this group. But there is an extension of Hifikabin.
Low-contrast style: In any case a different header background. The only problem is that even a healthy visitor must be able to read something.
