Saving the info without the forum

Post by kholman »

Probably not the best title but not sure how better to describe.
We have a series of related phpBB forums (actually 5) that were used as an interactive discussion of almost open source product development over a number of years. The product has reached the point where it has stabilized and any further development no longer fits that format. We've moved onto product support/maintenance which is provided by vendors.
Anyway, we've switched the forums to view only with no new posts or registrations allowed. We're considering whether there is a way to just archive and store (which view access) without the need to maintain the forum structure (upgrades, php changes at our host platform, etc.)
One way of getting there would possibly be printing each page as a pdf or similar but that would be labor-intensive and time consuming.
Anyone have other ideas to get there?
Thanks in advance.

Can’t you just archive it like we’ve done here with earlier no longer supported versions of software? Like here for example?

If I understand correctly, those "archived" areas are essentially what we've done for now, i.e., set permissions to allow no further posts or registrations.
As I understand the forum software, they need to be maintained/updated to keep security up to date. I'm really looking for a way to allow them to be static and visible (possibly searchable) without an ongoing need to update/maintain them.

you can have static with no updates or you can have security by updates, but you can't have both.

having said that, as long as your board is up to date with the 3.3.0 version as of now, the chances of anyone hacking your board is very slim.

as for spam, if you are not allowing posting then there will be no spam.

when you are ready, just set all forums to read only access for the registered user group and the guest group.

done.

It's certainly an understandable request. Even users who have "done nothing" and were happy with leaving their boards at phpBB 2.x or 3.0.x are here now, "forced" to upgrade yet again. Since even though they "stood still", their hosting provider and PHP versions did not.

We did help someone use WGET to walk their site and download every page as HTML. The scenario at the time was "make a backup of the site even though the site owner is AWOL", and no better option existed. WGET is a bad solution for that scenario, because even though you get an HTML download of every walked page, their intention was ultimately to build another phpBB site with that data, and parsing from HTML back to phpBB is hard.

But in your case the HTML-rendered page is the end goal. You might need to do some minor massaging to the downloaded HTML data to help build a static site you can tweak and manage CSS display of and similar, but "the hard part" was already done for you by phpBB in rendering the posts (along with the BBCode, etc.) to HTML. Of course the pages are not agnostic, and still "look like phpBB" rather than some generic information export. But with enough "Search & Replace In Files" of your favorite editor, maybe even that changes.

Thanks for the replies and thoughts.
For now, the freeze posts and registrations works.
If anyone has other ideas, please feel free to share. I'll be checking back periodically.
