Maybe phpBB should do the same as WordPress:

wordpress.org
wordpress.com

For those who don't know, let me explain briefly.

wordpress.org:
Just like phpbb.com, it is a community that develops, supports and distributes WordPress as open source. In general, it is no different from phpbb.com.

wordpress.com:
They both distribute and host WordPress themselves. You can set up a site completely free of charge, or by purchasing packages, you can upgrade the server and have a paid domain.

Example of free domain:

yourdomain.phpbb.com

It will run on phpBB infrastructure and servers. Users will not have a problem with the server or the host. Likewise, even if they upgrade their accounts and continue with a paid domain, they will not have a problem. Their only job is to manage the forum.

However, phpBB's sponsored ads will be displayed on the forums in this free package. (Please do not exaggerate. :) ).

Thus, while developing the project with phpBB open source, on the other hand, it will generate income with the service it provides.

phpBB's image will rise. Developers will also want to produce here. However, on the hosting side, it is necessary to act smart as in WordPress.

In my opinion, phpBB should do this.

Whether it's a wannabe. :) Move this site to .org and start the project at .com. Personally, I find this venture exciting.

If this happens, who cares about Facebook Groups?

My guess is thats their already is in HostGator, GoDaddy, BlueHost +++++ pockets and do what you are suggesting already but leaves people who wants to contribute in the dark about it, while having the "hosting" tab up, they hide the fact that they are owned or somehow connected to Endurance Group, and therefore these sponsorers have never changed in the past 10+ years.

Sad news for those who countributed along the way, but still a way to hide people from knowing their sketchy way of doing business. Just do a google search for endurance group and you'll get a scary picture. Owning all the big hosters while hiding in the background with different names.

I guess i went back on my word this was the last post in this "thread", so let me spoil the beans, over 10 people has quit the project over the past 7 years, the fact that i tried to give them money but was turned downed may something to do with my posts about hostgator, who also controls subredits for webhosting on reddit, and deletes and auto-deleted posts about any other hosting company.

phpBB can live on, only with people who are not in it for the money, however the community needs to be reuinted, php 7.4 EOL is in November, however, phpBB3.3.3.8 runs perfectly on php8 and doesnt require any modification to change builds for php. The deperecated functions are not used in phpBB3.3.3.8.

Let the conspiracy out of the closet and let us know why no one from dev-team seem to care about this thread while they let support voulanteers do their dirty work without knowing the facts. Please.

I fail to see why your comments about hostgator would even reach the phpBB team and I doubt they care.

Even though they're owned by the same company, Bluehost is the name they promote for hosting. So even though they promote bluehost, I doubt they care about reddit comments specific to hostgator.

If I am not mistaken, phpbb.com does not "promote" bluehost or any other host. they simply sell advertising space to those hosts.

Advertising is a form of promotion, so yes, if they have a long-term advertising agreement with them, that is a promotion.

If you check the current "active" contributers up versus Fewfold Digital you'll be surpirsed, then crossrefrence newfold digital with Endurance Group and you get a picture you wont like very much.

They wont take money, ref my donation of 50k USD turned down. However, they will take Endurance Group's/Newfund Digital's money without explaining why and their connection.
Hi,

I don't know who turned you down, but it wasn't any of us! Let's chat about what you're offering and how you'd like to see it used.

I actually tested a whole bunch of hosting providers many years ago and figured out which worked well with setting up a simple phpBB install. I also tested their support, etc. I then reached out to the ones that passed muster and asked if they wanted to work with us.

Well, getting phpBB4 out is a must. Depreciate the phpBB3 saga with phpBB 3.2.x EOL being soon after the release of phpBB4.

Dropping Chameleon as been stated by multiple people, as it is not viable and will never get out of development. Sure, phpBB 4.0.0 may be a bit wimpy with new features but it is mature enough for release. phpBB 3.3.9 should be the last version of phpBB 3.3.x and phpBB3 as a whole.

While phpBB3 had a good run, it is not the late 2000s anymore.

We seem, to agree on most of the things, while one thing is certain we all want to move forward. I have suggested plenty of options, but the reply has been "do it yourself" or "make a fork a publish it for everyone". I am not making a fork, I am simply adding mods / extensions and made them possible for 3.3.8 to work with, nothing else. I can share my source code with anyone if they contact me to see how I scrambled the forum together with the rest of my site (wont post the site name here in case of breaking rules, so contact me on PM if you want to see what I've done, and if you want any of my changes.

What I would like to see, is phpbb.com split in half, where one can host their forum with any of their sponsors/advertisers, project manager confirmed they had nothing to do with Endurance Group, I believe him. However, I do not think he has done the due diligience of the people who he works with good enough, who might be against him. Since i first contributed in 2001, there was no hassle or struggle about having mods, and letting people know these mods are done only when they have the knowledge AND/OR have the ability to switch back easily.

This is exactly what I want back, but in this thead I have been told by support staff that I can develop my mods/extensions myself, and use a skeleton extension for just a few lines of code, while another one in the same team says "that would never get approved". I want to believe the project manager in this case, and for him to read all these "threads" (gonna say that on purpose now, since your sarcasme is like me pooping over all your hard work which I am sure you have done more than enough of for free, @warmweer). It would be owerwhelming.

I offered to donate 50k USD, and it would be up to phpBB.com to handle these money as they see needed, of course - only for payments to the poeple who are able to make an effort in envolving the forum.Mr Colon was the one turning my money down, I guess it might has to do with his past involvedment in Newfold Digitial, or the fact that phpBB is open source for all Enducarance Group hosters now with a simple click.

I feel sorry for the people who's done so much in the past and got so little respect - as they deserve - but back then we were able to do things as long as the code passed security checks, and people were aware of the fact that mods needs redevelopment after an update. We were all prepared to do this work, but then mods were "banned" and 3.3.8 was released in June 2022 without any upgrades rather than the core, 301 redirects listed as human friendly url's was brought up when I mentioned SEO. This means nothing for google, Gooogle wants meta description and title as well as canoncial url's.

Can 3.3 and 4 live together in the future? Can we make a go fund me, where people actually bring in money to the team so they can develop more than the core and a new subsilver? Can phpBB4 finally get the extensions that was made possible as an option built in, without people having to search for it? No forum that doesnt have options will llive on forever, embrace the exstiense of the community rather than delaying extensions who obviously should been a part of phpBB3.2.

Ok so first of all I didn't turn you down. In fact I thumbed-up the direct message you sent to me on Discord with your email address as confirmation of receipt, which I then forwarded to the applicable person. If you want me to refresh your memory I can post a screenshot of your message.

Second of all I have no idea what Newfold Digital is nor have I ever been involved with any such company nor do I care to know what that company is or does. You don't know me at all so I would appreciate it if you would just stick to the facts and stop promoting fantastical stories about what you think you know about the staff here, our motivations for working on the project, or the history of staffing changes.

And by the way the surname Colón is pretty common in my country and several other Spanish-speaking countries, almost to the level of "Smith", so if you think you've found some sort of smoking gun because you found someone with my same surname then you're sadly mistaken.

The thumbs up, without saying anything means for me "Ok, cool bro". And it's been over a week since I suggested this to you in private, where I had suggested it here days before that. Project Manager said no one would turn this down, how come he never heard of this?
