[SOLVED] Transferring Forum

Post by Danny Wyatt »

I'm transferring my forum from a sub domain to a folder inside the main domain:
From www.forum.iamdannywyatt.com to www.iamdannywyatt.com/forum
I am following the instructions here.

So the server is the same, meaning when I log in to my cPanel and all that, I have access to those 2 locations.
I was able to transfer the files from the sub domain to the /forum folder.
I was also able to download the database.

Now I'm just a bit confused about the database section. Do I really need to create a blank database mentioned by those instructions or can I just use the database and just have it "connected" to the new location? I'm sorry if I'm not using the right terminology, but I'm not very familiar with databases, just the basic stuff such as creating them, where they are and how to export them.

When I go to the new location (www.iamdannywyatt.com/forum) I can see the forum and it seems to be working, but I wonder if there's anything else I need to do in order to avoid errors/issues in the future? Do I need to do what is said in the "Restore Database" section and beyond? Can I just move on and assume everything is configured as it should?

Thanks!

No you do not have to create a new database since you do not change host

Thank you for the quick reply.
Ok so the files inside /forum will know which database to use, right?
For example when I have a Wordpress website, which also uses a database, I know that some things inside the database have specific information about the domain so I guess for Wordpress it wouldn't be as simple as just moving files, I'm not sure...?

What would happen if I kept using the forum on the first location and at the same time on the second location? Would the database just keep updating with the information coming from 2 different locations?
I'm not doing that, of course, but I'm just curious how this would affect the database?

Also, a bit off-topic: is there a way to now automatically redirect visitors from one forum to the other?
For example, let's say I have a post with this URL forum.iamdannywyatt.com/post12345 (so the old forum)
And so when someone types that, it will take them to iamdannywyatt.com/forum/post12345 (the new forum)
I would like that to be applied to everything automatically so I don't have people visiting some posts I shared on my social media and finding an error page, you know? Is this possible? If so, how can I do this?

Thank you!

Don’t forget to edit your Cookie domain to suite the new location.

Search “redirect using .htaccess” there’s a ton of info available.

What do you mean by "edit your Cookie domain to suite the new location"?
Can you clarify what needs to be done?

Regarding the redirection, I was able to make it work by adding the code on the French page (at least on mobile there's an option to translate it).
Now on that same article it says that I need to go to the admin page and change some stuff under Server Settings.
Should I change Force server URL settings to Yes and then change the Domain Name from forum.iamdannywyatt.com to iamdannywyatt.com/forum?

I think I found it. It's General > Cookie Settings > Cookie Domain
Right?
And I change it from forum.iamdannywyatt.com to iamdannywyatt.com/forum, correct?
Any other change on that page or any other tab?
On that page I have it by default

Don't use /forum for your cookie domain
Thank you again!
I was having issues with the forum not saving my log in info and now that I removed /forum (so now it's just iamdannywyatt.com) it's keeping me logged in after I close the browser. Awesome!
Thank you so much for all your help today! :)

It should be .iamdannywyatt.com, note the leading dot. See Knowledge Base - Fixing incorrect cookie settings.

Oh ok. The other one I had was just forum.iamdannywyatt.com
And it's saving the log in info now. Does it make a big difference? Can you clarify the difference?
Thanks
