[RC] Legacy (phpBB 3.3.11)

Post by Big Monstro »

Hello everyone,

After phpBB 3.2 in 2017, I've updated the Legacy style - originally released in 2016 and designed for phpBB 3.1 - to support the phpBB 3.3 enhancements. Unlike other styles, it isn't based on prosilver and it's much lighter : enjoy a blazing fast user interface for your boards! The older browsers compatibility ensures it works with virtually all PCs, even the legacy systems still running Windows XP or lower.

Screenshots

Three color palettes are available: the default one gets a charming oldschool look and I propose two alternatives (dark and subsilver variants).

Since my last post, I've updated the board style for phpBB 3.3.3 and 3.3.4. The alternative color palettes have been updated as well.

Mediafire is actually a quite decent file hosting service...

Previously, I attached my files directly to my post (see viewtopic.php?t=2393721). Oddly, I cannot do that in the style forums intended for later phpBB versions (3.2 and 3.3): their user permissions prevent me to attach archives (like zip file). Therefore, I have to use an external hosting.

Hi, how about 3.3.5 version (at least 3.3.5)? Thank you!

The project is still ongoing and there will be future versions. I am just busy...

That said, you can use a style intended for phpBB 3.3.4 with later versions of phpBB.

After a long hiatus, I release updated versions just before the end of 2022 (Legacy 1.3.4 was released in 2021).
There is nothing revolutionary, they're just minor updates. The prosilver style has changed little since phpBB 3.3.4.

You can download Legacy 1.3.5, 1.3.6, 1.3.7 and 1.3.8, intended respectively for phpBB 3.3.5, 3.3.6, 3.3.7 and 3.3.8.

Legacy 1.3.9 will be released later, along with more changes, but the current last version is fully compatible with phpBB 3.3.9 ;)

I've added the [RC] prefix to comply with the board rules...

However, I don't think it's relevant for that style. It's neither based on prosilver, nor even intended to be added in the "Customisation Database" one day. That style was originally designed as a special feature for a retrocomputing community, with specific needs, but I eventually decided to make it public.

Can you not host it via GitHub so people can review code changes too?

Putting it under version control would be ideal. If it gets abandoned, someone else can fork it and continue development of the work (license permitting).

@ Meis2M, my board style has been designed and intended for computer users.

Some efforts have been made to improve experience on vintage PCs resolutions (4:3 display with 800x600 pixels or even 640x480), but making the style "responsive" for mobile phones would be a harder challenge. The width resolution is often even lower (the typical smartphone has a HD capable screen, useful to render videos, but it applies a strong zoom to render web pages. Otherwise, the things would be barely readable on a such small screen).

I've considered making the interface responsive, I tried years ago and may try again in the future. Maybe I'll wait for phpBB 4.0.

I've just updated the project files on github : legacy 1.3.11, for phpBB 3.3.11

Why can't you make the style responsive? It honestly is not very difficult to do and if you don't integrate that into the style, it won't get anywhere near the number of users it would get if it was responsive.
