What to need to know about installing a new Forum

Post by KillerBee »

Hi, guys and girls these days :P
I want to install a new forum. Yah I know there are tuts for that, but my question is this.
We had a older forum back in the days of phpbb that served well. Now years late ( think 23 years later ) I want to renew that one.
I still got the database but not sure if I can use that one and how secure might this be comparing the new stuff today ?
It this possible or do I have to be concerned about peeps that might have spammed in the past on there ?
You guys think it is better to start fresh and be sure or use the old one prune it and is this unsafe.

If I posted on the wrong spot please let me know or drag it into the right spot.
I did look over the forum but I didn't post a post like this or with my answer.
If there is sorry for that !

With regards,
KillerBee

That would imply your board was a version 2.0.x which means youl'll need to convert .
see docs/INSTALL.html#convert
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Doubtful it was 23 years ago, as phpBB 1.0.0 was only released in December 2000. phpBB is from April 2002.
If it was phpBB1 it is like nearly impossible to upgrade I would say. So you first need to find out what phpBB version the backup was, before we can say if upgrading is possible.

Thank you for replying.

Yah this was a estimation as the them we made was 2003, I just saw.
I didn't not create the forum but I know this was also there way before this theme. so it could be easy the first version.
Problem is that I just took over and had no time to pickup speed to get it all written down what's what how old versions and shit.
In the beginning I maintain the forums not the server and backend of it. After that I became very sick and missed the biggest part of it all.
I just picking up the pieces from the past !

Thank you for the replay of the convertor page.
Now I know there were some updates of certain versions does did have a impact from the conversion from 2 to 3 ? ( I mean do yo u need a certain version of 2 to get to 3 or counts this for all version of 2 ?)

How Can I find out what version it was in database as this is on the moment the only thing I have left or is this impossible ?

Thank you,
With reguards

Even in phpBB 2 there's a config table with a field version >>> that contains the versionnr.

However, version, e.g., 2.0.13 will be reported as ".13" (or maybe "0.13"?).
I can stop all your spam. I can upgrade or update your Board. PM or email me. (Paid support)
