Block user access depending on their age to a specific forum.

Post by FelipeYuuki »

I'm creating a "stories" forum, where there will be a part to post stories that may contain explicit violence, but I want the registration to require age to be filled in, and if the person is underage, this "explicit stories" topic does not display.
Can anyone help me with this?

The autogroups extension allows you to assign people to a group based on birthday. You could then use group forum permissions to give that group access to that forum if they pass the limit.

Allow birthdays is within the board features settings.
Not sure if you can set that to be a registration requirement off the top of my head.

In the ACP, Registration Settings you can enable COPPA. This requires users to declare that they are 13 years or older.
These members will be placed in the COPPA special group, with the permissions system you can ban the forums from stories containing explicit violence to this special group.

It's worth noting that it doesn't get around the following scenario

Are you over 18
no
Sorry you can't enter
Refresh
Are you over 18
Yes

In any case, the age information is at the discretion of the user, so if the user says that he is 20 years old, nothing certifies that this is his real age.

Coppa is only for the US and, if I remember rightly, there was fax machines involved.

At the end of it, asking the age is a bit pointless, I could tell you I’m 16.

Yes, asking age is pointless, but I don't see any other way as I don't want to restrict the person from posting these types of stories.

I'll try your suggestion, I think it works.

Actually, Coppa is not in my country, but we have relatively similar rules, but for under 18s.

I think I saw somewhere an extension that requests the date of birth when registering, I'll try to add it.

Do you think that young users registering in places on the internet lie about their birth date/age to get better access?
Although I can't remember ever seeing a young kid as a member of a site. Maybe some of you have.
