Front Page Not Loading + Extensions not showing [Solved]

I'm new to anything phpBB-related beyond being a member of other boards and I honestly struggle with anything coding-related so I'd appreciate baby-step information if anyone knows how to fix the issues I'm encountering. I just want a space to share with some friends and will take any and all help I can get.

I have been using the "Get Started" steps, so I have a host site and domain and I downloaded the phpBB to the site. It was showing correctly as the generic starter board, so I looked into adding extensions. I used YouTube videos for step-by-step with visual on how to add extensions, but the only one that successfully showed up was VigLink. No other extensions have shown up in the "Customise - Manage Extensions" section, so I don't have a way to enable them. I've verified several times that they should be in the correct spot, but I must still be doing something wrong.

I didn't log into the ACP for about two weeks, and suddenly the front page no longer loads. Please note that I do not have a CSS uploaded and haven't changed any skins. The only changes I did make were enabling buttons such as 'justify', as well as allowing slightly larger avatar pictures. I can access my control panel, but the front page is just a white screen. The site was fine for about a week untouched after this, and I've not made any additional changes, so I'm confused why the front page ceased to work. I verified that nothing else was changed in my admin logs, so I'm solidly stumped. Does anyone have any tips for fixing the front page, as well as getting extensions to work correctly?

Edit: Extensions issues have been solved! Still working on the white screen issue.

so I looked into adding extensions. I used YouTube videos for step-by-step with visual on how to add extensions, but the only one that successfully showed up was VigLink. No other extensions have shown up in the "Customise - Manage Extensions" section, so I don't have a way to enable them. Have you read the Installing Extensions documentation?

Can you please elaborate on what you mean by "no longer loads"? Do you just get a blank page or some other effect? If you get a blank page and have access to the server's error logs, please post the last 10 or so lines from those logs.

As for error logs, there are none present. The "not loading" is a white screen.

Please describe your problem. Sometime last week, the front page stopped loading correctly. It just shows a white screen when I try to visit the URL. I can only access the admin panel because the temporary domain I was assigned when I first registered the site is still in my web history.

Additionally, despite being confident that I'm downloading and opening extension files in the correct spot, they do not show up in my admin panel. The only extension (VigLink) was already there, presumably from downloading phpBB. I've followed both the Installing Extensions page and YouTube videos that show step-by-step the same procedure with visuals, but they don't appear in the Customize > Manage Extensions section.

Which is indicative of a suppressed PHP error. Did you check the server error logs? You say you can still get to the ACP, did you try to enable any extensions? Have you tried disabling any extensions you may have and also, what version of PHP are you using?

Generally, if extensions don’t show up they have been uploaded to the wrong place.

The server error log states "No log entries" and the only extension I have is VigLink, which I believe came with downloading phpBB as it's not one I added in myself. I can try disabling and re-enabling it to see if that does anything.

A founder has full access to the ACP so can give himself all permissions, and also remove the other founders.
There is no need to give someone else founder status.

I'm trying to use the Installing Extensions page but I don't understand the ftp stuff. I downloaded FileZilla and it has a bunch of information at the top to input, but I must not be doing this correctly.
Host, Username, Password, Port
I use BlueHost; I take it that username is what I use to log into my BlueHost account and same with the password; for Port best I can tell is that it's 993 based on one page on the BlueHost site, but I'm not entirely confident in that and I just keep getting errors.

Yet you managed to upload all the phpBB files to your host domain?!
Can't you do the same in order to upload extensions?

BTW your host control panel must have a section regarding FTP where you should find an FTP username (can differ from your hostaccount name),the host and port

I had someone telling me step by step what to look for (unfortunately, they also do not understand phpBB and were using video tutorials to walk me through this)
"look for where it says CPanel, scroll down to scripts, click install, unzip the phpbb files, install your domain name and admin info" and after I propogated my DNS(?), the site was visible. I'm including an imgur uploaded image of the home screen after those steps here just so you can see what I saw. Now I don't see that; it's just a blank white page.

The video tutorials we were using showed extensions in a really simple way but it wasn't through this FTP and it was working in the videos but my attempts to follow those steps didn't work. I can try to find the cpanel again and see if there's somewhere where I can paste the extension files in like I did last time though and see if that works.

I couldn't find anything in my host panels but I did manage to find the port. It claims the username is correct both for my bluehost login as well as my actual username on my site, and I know I'm typing the password correctly, but it gives me a 530 error claiming "Login authentification failed" after password. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Unfortunately when I say I understand nothing of any of this, I'm not being modest or exaggerating. I'm used to phpBB as a casual user with very mild interaction of BBCode, not as an administrator. I'm just trying to make a space where I can host writing and reading discussion for a small group.

I'm so sorry you are having trouble with the software.

Regarding the blank page, have you reached out to Bluehost support? They should be able to provide you with the server's error logs (note that this is different from phpBB's error logs ).

I'm wondering if part of the reason for the blank page may be due to extensions being uploaded incorrectly. You mentioned you were trying to install some; so it's possible they were uploaded to the wrong directory and that's causing problems?

I haven't reached out to Bluehost support yet, no. That's my plan in an attempt to fix what I'm finding is called the "white screen of death" in php, as there are no error logs in my admin panel. So hopefully Bluehost can see something on their end. Update: The person assisting me from Bluehost doesn't seem to know what I'm asking about when I ask for server error logs. They temporarily broke things by changing the version of php I had and then changed it again a few times but now I finally have some error logs. They moved me onto PHP version: 7.4.33

After consulting probably half a dozen websites on how to actually do the FTP stuff, it turns out Bluehost has a section for it and I was able to successfully get the extension to show up and therefore enable it. Now hopefully the only issue is fixing the white screen issue. Apologies on missing your reply; I was down a rabbit hole trying to figure it out LOL

So you actually installed phpBB using the host 1-click install.

The problem with this is that these kinds of installation may have been altered.
You're better of deleting that and reinstalling with the file package downloaded from phpbb.com and following the official guide

The other things is you mentioned that the initial setup was using PHP 8.3 but the PHP version was later downgraded to 7.4.

PHP 8.3 is relatively new and AFAIK phpBB 3.3.11 has not been declared fully compatible yet (which doesn't intrinsically imply that it's not compatible).
PHP 7.4 has been EOL for a long time already and some extension may not be compatible.
You should really be using PHP 8.2

My suggestion: delete the installation, switch to PHP 8.2 and reinstall following the official installation instructions.

Fact is the mimimum PHP requirement for 3.3.11 is 7.2 IIRC.

PHP 8.2 works fine for me.
8.1 is 100% compatible.

As of a minute ago, my phpBB admin control panel is showing PHP version: 8.3.3
It did not say that last night, and I haven't made any changes myself, mostly because I don't understand any of this and don't want to break things further, and because I have no idea where to look to change versions, outside of what you guys have been kind enough to link.

The Bluehost customer support person was difficult to work with. They misunderstood several direct requests for them to provide the server error logs and swapped my PHP version around a few times, with the only different result being that instead of a white/blank screen, I got an error message that the versions weren't compatible. They switched it to one where I'm still getting the white screen. They also told me I should just use Wordpress so they can help me, and said they can't make changes because it's third party and they don't want to mess things up. I had to explain and copy your requests for server logs twice before they finally provided them, and I wound up asking how to find them myself, so I don't have to use their customer support to receive error logs in the future.

As of this afternoon, this is the full listing below, and per the server error logs (if I am understanding it correctly), it claims I'm on PHP 7.0.33 so I'm a bit confused. Why would the phpBB admin panel show a completely different version?
I understand at this point if I need to wipe and re-install in this other way, so that linked guide and any further information/assistance is readily welcome.
