convert from 2 to 3.3 but different domains/servers

Converting from other board software? Good decision! Need help? Have a question about a convertor? Wish to offer a convertor package? Post here.

convert from 2 to 3.3 but different domains/servers

Post by cassie1275 »

Because i am going from 2 to 3.3 the install would not work as the php was not high enough, but upping the php breaks the old forum.
So i installed 3.3 on one of my other domains but now the converter is asking for the relative path which i can't do.

the old forum is on https://www.caroles-crafts.co.uk/forum/index.php

the new one will be on https://www.craftbits.co.uk/forum33/

They are both under the same account with Site Ground and i have 5 other domains on there too. I don't care which one it is on eventually. The hoster is turning off the old php on 7th march so have a tight deadline and another bigger forum to do too.

I guess my only options are

1. to change the php on caroles-crafts and accept the forum is broken until i get this sorted (i have backups)

2. don't convert and just lose all the old stuff.

Unless any of you clever people have another option :-)

You could always do the conversion on your desktop machine by Installing and Setting Up Your Own Web Server.

The recommended instructions are here Upgrading from 2.0 to 3.3 including these instructions.

Install a copy of you board on a personal webserver on your pc (allowing you to switch PHP version).
ON the PWS, convert the phpBB 2 to 3.0.14, test ... and then convert that to 3.3.11. (that what I've done a couple of times, I've never gone directly from 2 to 3.3)
Then copy the 3.3.11 to the new domain.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Hi
Thanks for the replies.
The hoster suggested a subdomain.
I looked at the own web server in the installation but the link went to a dead page. Just had a quick look and think it is beyond me. The install files seem to say we can go straight from 2 to 3.3 even though all the posts on the forum say go to 3.0 first.

If i did go the sub domain route, what would be the relative path name then?
Board path:
This is the relative path on disk to your former board from the root of this phpBB3 installation.

Just an update.

Never found a way to do relative from domain to subdomain so abandoned the idea the hosters AI suggested

Decided to just update the php and lose the old forum, done one so far, straight from 2 to 3.3 so that was good. I made the stupid error of not taking a screenshot of the old forum so starting again with the style.

Just got the bigger one to do now, hopefully i can remember what i did, and i have taken screen shots

You can still install the old phpBB2 on a personal webserver to see the looks (you do have a full backup I presume?)

i do have a full backup :-)

The personal webserver looked scary, perhaps this is a good opportunity to give the design a overhaul
