Is the there anyway to add a better search facility to my forum.

Search for Sphinx, that’s what’s used here. Sphinx is selectable in ACP> General> Server configuration> Search settings> Sphinx Fulltext. But, it isn’t that straightforward, it requires some configuration from your end. For more information go to Sphinx.

Is your hosting a shared account?

Sadly, from my experience the Sphinx Open Source Search Server generally isn't available to those running on shared hosting plans as it is a server daemon.

You also need to allocate RAM to it and be able to edit the .conf file, the larger the DB the more RAM it needs. Basically you need a VPS or better.

It all sounds a bit too complicated to me, I think I will leave things as they are, thank you for the replies.

Why not add the Google Search box to your forum. Then users can use both, as both will often return slightly different results.
