MySQL database transfer to MariaDB and vice versa

Post by laubertinf »

Hi,

(Excuse my poor english, not my native language and I have no reply in french boards)

My phpBB 3.3.11 forum is currently hosted in PHP 8.1 and mySQL 5.5.

I'm considering changing hosting provider (in Europe).
I noticed in my research that some hosts only offer mariaDB (sometimes claiming greater reliability).

What about compatibility?
Are there any known issues?
Is it enough to restore a SQL backup of the old mySQL database in the new mariaDB?

And especially,
If in the future I change host again, is it possible to go back to a host that only uses mySQL?

THANKS.

MariaDB is a fork of MySQL so it should work without any issues for any web application, there has been no issues I'm aware of with phpBB. Vice versa if you go back to MySQL should be no issue.
