Anyone here still using PHPBB2?

Post by JLA »

Just doing a roll call to see who out there still has an active PHPBB2 board?

If you are out there, how long has your board been active and how is it running? Any current issues that you are dealing with running an older flavor of PHPBB?

Between the outdated and unsupported third party packages and security vulnerabilities, I don’t think many if any exist anymore except for maybe the odd ‘refugee’ sites that come and go.

I do miss the simplicity of phpBB2 though.

If updated properly, there are no existing security vulnerabilities in the latest version of PHPBB2

I do use, —occasionally— because of development of themes for clients that are still using phpbb2 and don’t wanna bother to upgrade their boards. Aside from that I don’t think anyone should use outdated platforms.

Not a good idea. Ensure your security is top notch and PHP is hardened aswell and modsecurity. But even though not recommended at all.

Out of curiosity has there been any third party updates? I know before the release of phpBB3 Acydburn did an in house audit of phpBB2 code for the last release.

There's this. I'd like to see it updated for PHP 8 just for fun to play with it, but not holding my breath.

There is also this https://github.com/IntegraMOD/phpBB2x
it has a lot of updates and runs well in php7.4. I updated it about a year ago to support a client project. some code has been updated for php8.3 but nothing that breaks php7 compatibility. I dropped the ancient social platforms and added the current generation of social media platforms and added a few responsive styles.
I did get phpBB3.0.14 running on php8.3 though. https://github.com/IntegraMOD/phpbb3.0.15
it has a few updates as well such as captchas and responsive templating. Some of the acp and prosilver responsive updates came from phpBB3.3x and I added the ever popular "dark mode" to prosilver and IM Blue
Only remaining issue is that if mysql is setup with sql_mode=only_full_group_by then ego search will error. It does not like "SELECT *"

Yes, I'm aware of IntegraMOD, but I was referring to the original 2.0.23 release with fixes for PHP 8. No additional styles or social icons or anything. ;)

neither of those two projects are integramod. They are the core phpbb versions. I just added them to github via my integramod account.
phpbb2x is the core of integramod 151 and if using the subsilver style, its indistinguishable from phpBB2.0.23 other than the acp uses only the prosilver style. It originally included 4 social networks, all of them are either gone or irrelevant. I simply updated them like phpBB did in later versions. Its not mods, its evolution))
phpBB3.0.15 is the core of IM3 and you would need to be intimately familiar with phpBB3.0 to notice the differences between the official phpBB3.0.14 and phpBB3.0.15 other than fontawsome and the dark style switch
Changes were intentionally kept to a minimum and only added to make them usable in a modern environment.

the extra syles were added because these two projects are essentially abandonware and without an active support site, where would a user find additional styles? Besides, the phpBB2x subsilver is like a model A ford.
Its kinda beautiful from certain angles, just dont try to drive it in the real world)) The bootstrapped subsilver just made it work correctly on a phone screen. When I made these styles, I hade been out of the game for 6-7 years and was asked to make a bootstrap style for IM151. That is an overwhelming task even for a currently active developer as IM151 has about 20x more tpls than 2.0.23 so I learned bootstrap on phpBB2.0.25)

Thank you :D :D

Code: Select all

I suggest you go to the phpBB 2 support site and ask as phpBB 2 doesn’t get support here anymore so it’s not really the place to ask.

Yah sorry i can’t support here since it’s not a current phpBB project. You can post directly on GitHub or integramod. I will say though that your attempting to install via mysql4 which i thought had been removed because its way over eol. Try mysqli. Any additional support will have to be elsewhere

I cant register to integra,

Code: Select all

General Error
Language file ./language/en/mods/group_on_regs.php couldn't be opened.
I installed 3.0.15 but gives error in acp when i click in spambot countermeasures, i would use 3.0.15 if you can make it stable, just to run the old subsliver themes and playign with them :D
i installed the 3.0.14 last oficial realese on lowest php version i can on this host 5.3.29, but when im create a new topic, if the message is huge (many characters), it gives error 404
