I do not agree with you. I have several paid extensions that don't exist in the phpBB repository and they are extremely useful, for me at least.

I believe this is not quite the case, look at Wordpress or Joomla. They are open source scripts but there are several paid or free extensions and see the size of the community.

Someone said that with a paid extension you run the risk of not getting any more updates, which is not very different from here at phpBB.

And even so, when you need help with an extension here at phpBB you receive the answer to contact the owner.

I don't deny that there are useful extensions in the phpBB repository, but how many are kept up to date?

With Wordpress I think their figures are skewed by their ventures in to the ‘CMS’ business and are being pushed along by hosts offering their software as an easy path to website building.

So basically the summary is to agree the terms with your developer, check your license and go for it however you like.

If that extension is useful for me I would buy it, even if I find it around “for free”. I’ve been on the internet since the start and I can find everything 😅

I hope you make your money back, put any profit you earn towards new development or time to help others ahead with phpBB or something else you are passionate about and let the entire cycle repeat with something else. Win win if you ask me.

(I know I’m simplifying but essentially, that’s really it)

I have spent the last decade myself (literally, the anniversary is this summer) spending countless hours into creating a community (with phpBB right from the start and it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made) and it’s only now I’m seeing some of that karma coming back to me in very unexpected ways (not anything financial yet - faaaaar from - but hey, that’s not all that counts) and I am absolutely loving it.

Any donations I have received have gone to good causes, including paid phpBB extensions and donations to free ones that have been particularly useful (I wish I could do more of that, I have my list of people I feel I owe something to and a lot of them are on this board).

Best of luck from me!
