[CDB] Browser Push Notifications

Post by MattF »

Extension Name: phpBB Browser Push Notifications
Author: phpBB Extension Development Team

Extension Description: Enable Web Browser Push Notifications for your phpBB forum. Board members will be able to receive real-time system notifications from their browser on their computers or devices for any of phpBB's existing notifications. This covers essential forum activities such as posting, moderating, and private messaging.

This extension gives phpBB3 forums early access to the Push Notification feature originally developed for phpBB4.

Features:
  • Instant notifications: Users receive timely alerts for common forum activities.
  • Customizable preferences: Users can personalize their notification settings to align with their preferences and usage patterns.
  • Cross-device compatibility: Notifications are delivered across a range of devices and browsers.
Extension Version: 1.0.0
Requirements: phpBB 3.3.12 (or newer)

Extension Download: https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... fications/

Notes:
  • Usage on a local development server can be a little bit tricky. Creating the required Public/Private VAPID keys only works on a "localhost" named server.
  • Push notifications will only work when sent from a secure SSL server with a valid certificate (and they may not work on a localhost).
  • For best experience it should be tested on a public forum hosted on a secure server.

This looks good, and it seems as though phpBB 4 might be closer to release than expected too.

Updated to version 1.0.0-RC2

IMPORTANT: If you already installed version 1.0.0-RC1, you can not update it. You must fully uninstall RC1 (Disable and Purge). Also, ignore any uninstallation errors you get.

RC2 must be installed as a fresh new installation.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Hello,
I must be asking nonsense, is the extension native phpBB or does it need third-party authorization?

Which would be?

There are no 3rd party services involved.

I was so happy that I put aside whatever I was doing at that moment, set up a test board and tried it. marvellous!!!! Thank you infinitely.

I have some notes.

* If I have blocked notifications in the browser, the Subscribe button does not react. It might be useful if it can't be pressed in Disabled mode or if there is a notification in a pop-up window.

* I think Web Push is just as important as Notifications, so I think it should have all options enabled by default. or some, like email notifications... or can we do that? It would be very useful to have a way for those who want to do this.

* I think it would be very useful to be able to enable Web Push anywhere other than ACP. Many possibilities of use are possible with customisations. It would also be good for UX.

best regards

In my tests between Chrome and Edge, avatars did not appear.

On the other hand, as far as I can see, to be equivalent to 4.0, some things will not be done if they will not be in the core.
