Critical upgrade from 3.0.14 to latest

Post by kenwardc »

Hi there, Folks

I have a client who is still running 3.0.14 on one of our servers. The BB has a 6+Gb database. I am tied to running PHP 5.x for this client because of course I cannot get the phBB running in its current form on the latest version of PHP.

No-one knows how exactly we can upgrade the existing forum or databases so that I can move to a more modern server so I am hoping someone here is able to help. Although it is not something we normally do they are a very good client and I am prepared to help by NOT charging out my time to perform the upgrade.

Can anyone tell me how to get the BB updated to the latest version from 3.0.14 and if necessary how to transfer all the data from the existing database to the new forum?

Many thanks in anticipation of some help with this.

on the current server
Lock the board
Use the official STK for 3.0.14 to clean the database
Take a full file directory backup.
Take a full database backup.

on the new server
Copy the file/directory backup to the new board root
Create a database for the new server
Restore the database backup in that new database.
Edit the config.php so that the new database is recognised.
Follow the instructions in Upgrading from 3.0 to 3.3

I do suggest you empty the search index on the 3.0.14 in order to reduce import time.
Once the board is up and running on the new server, the search index can be repopulated.

Before starting I suggest you have a look at the Knowledge Base
e.g. Transferring Your Board to a New Host or Domain
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Hi there, warmweer

WOW - Thanks for the detailed reply. I actually don't know how the BB works but will attempt to follow the documentation and get it updated.

Will come back with progress reports.

Cheers - Chris

I prefer to do the upgrade in smaller steps.
3.0.14 => 3.1.0
3.1.0 => 3.2.0
3.2.0 => 3.3.11
Especially with a bigger database!

Hi Janus - yes - I am inclined to agree with you. I will do the initial upgrade to 3.1.0 and when I make sure that I have done everything, then I continue until I get to the latest version. This client has a very busy forum so it's going to be tricky.

Try it first with a copy of the board.
If the upgrade is successful, edit everything until the client is happy with the result and than repeat the whole proces with the live board.

Sounds very sensible to me. Thanks for your reply.

The board shouldn't be "busy" while updating or upgrading.

ACP > tab GENERAL > Board Configuration > Board Settings >
Disable board:
This will make the board unavailable to users who are neither administrators nor moderators. You can also enter a short (255 character) message to display if you wish.
