Lots of problems since upgrading from 3.0.x to 3.3.13

Post by beltguy »

Since the upgrade, the EXTENSIONS and ACP_CAT_MODS buttons in ACP do not work. The EXTENSIONS only yields a blank page. The MODS button returns several errors the first of which is:

Code: Select all

[phpBB Debug] PHP Warning: in file [ROOT]/includes/acp/acp_mods.php on line 40: include(./../includes/editor.php): Failed to open stream: No such file or directory
I installed and activated the Board Announcement extension, but have not found a way to create the announcement block (assume since my EXTENSIONS function is not working. This extension worked fine in the 3.0.x version

I have spent perhaps 20 hours trying many suggestions from various phpbb sites and nothing seems to work.

Please help

It sounds like you have an incomplete upgrade. What does your "Board version:" say in the acp? If it says 3.3.13 then your db updated but it sounds like your still on old files. You should not have a ACP_CAT_MODS tab as that is from 3.0.x as is [ROOT]/includes/acp/acp_mods.php. These should not exist in 3.3.

It’s fairly obvious something is missing or corrupt or not uploaded properly etc. from the error message “No such file or directory”. For your upgrade you should be following Upgrading from 3.0 to 3.3 methodically.

Regards your extensions you should check the extension(s) support forum, or wherever you downloaded it, for information about it’s phpBB version support.

There should not be a "MOD" tab at all after upgrading to 3.3.13, could it be that you didn't clean your database from MOD remnants before upgrading it? That is the reason why serial 5. exists in the Upgrade Guide.

Thank you for the quick replies. I had suspected (after all my attempts at resolving my issues) that I got a bad install.

I did download the upgrade guide and printed it out. Thought I had followed all the steps -- guess not. I will download the support tool kit and make sure the mods database is clean. Then I will do another clean install including downloading a new 3.3.13 package.

While I am far from a computer whiz, I have not struggled with a platform as much as phpbb. I sure wish that the upgrades were more straight forward.

I've been doing updates on my board for over a decade. Really haven't had any major problems. I would suggest following the update directions exactly. If you don't, you are going to have a bad time. Also, try to keep up with updates vs being 20+ releases behind. Probably a lot less chance of something messing up going to the latest version from 3.3.12 vs 3.0.X.

Honestly ... the information you provided (upgrading from 3.0) should immediately have rung a bell on those various phpBB sites.

Only read topics. Should have posted sooner

As I mentioned upgrading is not super easy. I am a volunteer webmaster and it is so easy to not mess with something that is working fine.

For those of you who do this daily it is much easier than it is for this old fart.

If it's any consolation I'm not very knowledgeable about webserver things either. I've learned over the years to just follow the steps in the upgrade/update instructions exactly without any deviation.

Did you follow Mick's suggestion about reuploading the files and making sure the extensions are compatible?

I am out of town this weekend. Will pick away at doing a complete re-install early next week.

I thought I followed the instructions exactly but i suspect I did not get the mod database cleaned out properly. Also, I seem to recall that I had some sort of glitch during the install process. That should have been a clue.

The forum is functional, but the administrative tools, not so much.

Unfortunately another question.

The guide says:
Remove all MOD-related changes from the database
There is not a clear explanation of how to do that (and where I probably went wrong). The suggestion has been made to use the "Support Toolkit". However the site says that it is only good for 3.0.x. At least one other post says the same thing. A search on removing the mod database components only yields posts that are several years old.

So: Support Toolkit or ??????

Can you see why it is a bit complicated for a very part time, non-whiz, old fart to make the upgrade?

Again, thanks for the help and hanging in there with me.

you run the support toolkit(stk) be4 the update on phpbb 3.0.x with a compatible php version which should remove all mods from database then you can update to 3.3.x
there is a stk for 3.3.x buts its a unofficial version https://github.com/Tatiana5/phpBB3.2-STK

So if anyone is still following this thread, I am still not sure how to clean out all the mod related parts.

I guess one option is to reinstall 3.0.x and use the stk.

Is there another option that will allow me to clean out the mods components?

STK is the only recommended way I am aware of. I supposed you can try to do it manually but you would have to know what each mod did.

Updating phpBB within version 2 and 3.0 with modifications was usually a hassle but upgrades from 3.0 to 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3 are usually a piece of cake specifically because all modifications need to be removed before upgrading, (which has been made quite simple thanks to the STK).
