Header question

Post by An_American_Hero »

How do we make a customized type header across the top of our websites? I've seen quite a few phpbb format websites that have a customized header that spans the width of the page and takes up the entire header part of the page. Anyone know to do that?

Your template allows this. Just upload a larger image

probably similar to how I have mine

www.mile-high.co.uk/forum

to span it across the whole width and make it look decent, you have to edit the "overall_header.tpl" which is in the phpbb2/templates/subsilver (or whichever style you have) directory

open this file up and edit it with whatever header you want

it will then use this over all the forum pages

Similar, but the ones I saw and would like to do take up the entire header space, starting at the top of the page to the top of the main table.

If I make an image, does it have to be a certain size to accomplish that and what part of the overall_header_tpl do I edit it into?

Exactly. So far all I've done is change the phpbb logo with my own, but I'd like to have an image span the entire header area with the pertinent links included inside of the image. I'm also considering having the the title area links(login, FAQ, profile, etc) in a seperate field below the main header area.

Any help out there on this one?

yeah you need to make the image the correct size depending on how wide you want it

I just opened the overall_header.tpl up in dreamweaver and added the html for my header in place of the html that was there before

you want text on top of your header img you could make it a background image useing css and then format the text so it would be on top of the image where you wanted it.

The image below is the effect I'm looking for minus the user panel on the left hand side, and of course I would have a different image. But I noticed when I looked at the file in my Notepad, the code doesn't have numbers to indicate any sizes, it simply looks like the second image. Where is the image written in the code and where are the sizes?

You could try rearranging the table setup in overall_header.tpl so that your image or logo spans the entire width...

Instead of the default subSilver first few lines of the header (including the logo):

Code: Select all

<table width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="10" border="0" align="center">
	<tr>
		<td class="bodyline"><table width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0">
			<tr>
				<td><a href="{U_INDEX}"><img src="templates/subSilver/images/logo_phpBB.gif" border="0" alt="{L_INDEX}" vspace="1" /></a></td>
... you could do something like this:

Code: Select all

<table width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="10" border="0" align="center">
	<tr>
		<td class="bodyline"><table width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0">
			<tr>
				<td><a href="{U_INDEX}"><img src="templates/subSilver/images/logo_phpBB.gif" border="0" alt="{L_INDEX}" vspace="1" /></a><br />
				<span class="maintitle">{SITENAME}</span><br /><span class="gen">{SITE_DESCRIPTION}<br />&nbsp; </span>
			</tr>
... which places the logo (and with the site description centered under it) in a full-width row of it's own.

Not sure if the code is correct, but it's worth a shot.

Good Luck!
