Actually, when you think about it, GMail, Orkut and similar beta products do (GMail still does, but everyone gets 100 invites each last time I checked) require invites. And both of the ones I mentioned are by Google.
I don't see you saying anything about them being evil.
iChat is not open-source, and neither is AIM. In fact, with the exception for Jabber, many IM clients do not use their own protocol... the software may be open-source, but the protocol is not. AIM is ad-supported as well, so that's one reason it's free.
