How does this spammer do it?

Ever since I made my forum searchable by Google, I keep getting this one pest (at least I think it's the same person) who signs up and shows his website as either a porn, drugs, or gambling site.

I first installed the 'only show active users' mod. Then he kept signing up using different email addresses, so I banned *@mail.ru and installed the 'signup ip address' mod and banned several different ip addresses.

So today he signs up again with a @mail.ru email address and an ip address of 0.0.0.0. This is more of a minor annoyance than anything else, but I am curious as to how he could do that.

Have you tried enabling Visual Confirmation in admin panel -> general admin -> configuration?

This is just a spam robot. Visual confirmation should stop them.

Hmmmm. Don't see that. I'm on 2.0.15. Sounds like I have to do an upgrade.

You need to update your forum and your style ...
Visual confirmation is included as default feature since the remote 2.0.11

Actually, I don't think it's turned on by default. I try to keep my forum uptodate, but I usually don't read the change logs. I didn't even know visual confirmation was a feature until a couple releases later when someone mentioned it on the forums.

Ever since I turned it on, it's been incredibly effective in stopping the bots.

It's a defualt feature just not enabled by defualt, which it should be.

Starting at version 2.0.18, VC is on by default. Lots of people complaining about it, too - they're running pre-2.0.11 styles, so they don't display the graphic, and can't see to disable it...
