Allow Message Board Comparison Discussion

Post by Dave Bean »

I respectfully ask that phpBB re-evaluate its position on:

(1) Not allowing message board comparison discussions

or

(2) Not allowing links to established popular websites that do allow message board comparison discussions

#2 seems like a strange possition, since phpBB benefits from such discussions and phpBB is not a commercial product. Have we arrived at the stage in development that we have nothing to learn from others?

The problem is this kind of discussions goes pretty quickly to nowhere, each being persuade than shouting and exegerating more than the other will bring the truth. It is very difficult to bring these topics clean, especially when occuring on a support site of one of the product. Even linking a third party site drive the afficionados to pollute this way the discussion. The approach of which one is better is definitivaly not the good one. An approach with can/can not do will bring a healthier analize, although not the best either.

I think it is the main reason this kind of topics are usualy not allowed on support board (this is not specific to phpBB :)).

The reason they don't allow it is simple - you will get quite a biased opinion. This is after all the phpBB forum.
Anyone posting on here will be here becuase they either like the software, use it or want to use it. If I was interested in vBulitten, I wouldn't ask here, i'd ask at the vB forums where people could help.
Same with here, i wouldn't ask over vB how phpBB works or fairs.
In my own persoanl opinion - stuff like this is best suited to websites that were made for that purpose - like programmingtalk.com or something :)

Plus topics like these have often turned into spamfests

OK - Let's agree that perhaps #1 is not the best because of the reasons expressed - why not allow #2 - links to neutral message boards where comparisons are discussed?

Want to discuss various message boards to your hearts content? Easy...
  1. Head here: http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php
  2. Find a suitable webhost that fits the requirements to run phpBB.
  3. Get a snappy domain name
  4. Install phpBB to said domain name
There you go... king of your own castle or whatever.

As for here, nothing is going to change, we arrived at this point of not allowing cross-BBS comparisons because this is the most objective thing to do. If phpBB works best for you, with its pros and cons... ace. If it doesn't, then you're in your right to use whatever else you damn please.
