[BETA] Ribbons

Post by Brf » Sun Aug 13, 2006 2:44 pm

MOD Title: Ribbons
MOD Description: Medals awarded by the Admin to his users that display like Army-style ribbons below their signature in their posts

MOD Version: 0.8.0

MOD Download: http://castledoom.com/forum/files/Ribbons.zip
Last Stable version: na.

##############################################################
## Author Notes:
## This mod includes samples for both ribbon types. The webhost should use Paintshop, or some similar graphics
## editting program to make his own set of ribbons.
## Each ribbon should be a gif with single a Alpha character 'A' thru 'Z', with the prefix of "Rib" or "Small".
## e.g. Rib-A.gif, or Small-M.gif
## The ACP user-edit will have a field for each ribbon type, which the admin fills in with each ribbon
## that has been awarded to each user. For instance, if user "Bob" has been awarded Ribbons B,C and small M and D
## his "Ribbons" field should be filled in with "BC" and "Small Ribbons" should be filled with "MD".
## The user ribbon-length field indicates how many regular ribbons should be placed in a row before
## a second row is started. Small ribbons are always placed in a single row.
## If a ribbon should change after being awarded a second time, a version of that ribbon with "2" after its letter
## can be made. For instance, "Rib-A.gif" has one star, and "Rib-A2.gif" has two stars. This should be awarded
## by putting "A2" in the "Ribbon" field, e.g. "BA2C", if the user has been awarded B, A2, and C.

It looks neat, but couldn't a user just add the images to his signature? Actually, if you disabled images in signatures with the signatures control mod, it could work pretty well; are the two mods compatible with each other?

Theoretically yes they could simulate these awards, but since they appear below the signature, not in it, you can tell them apart. With the small forum I program for, I can remove fakes from the user signature.

But actually, if you look close, there is a nice black border between the large ribbons. It would be hard to simulated that unless they took a screen-shot of someone elses and pasted it into their sig.

After installing this mod, I get the following error

Template->make_filename(): Error - template file not found: ribbon_classes.tpl

Brf, i know i could being here posting with another nick but i can't.. I'm a man who's used to say what is thinking, in any case.
well...
I do not really see the reason why to produce a such MOD,

I know there are other MODs they can give (by Mods or Admins) to any user a medal or so on reward..

so..

what's the purpose of this one (a part the following quoted) ?
MOD Description: Medals awarded by the Admin to his users that display like Army-style ribbons below their signature in their posts

The like Army-style ribbons bit below blah?
..
thank you! :)

I checked out the other medal MODs and they weren't to my liking. They placed the medal in the left column with the names, ranks, and avatars. That area is too cluttered as it is. This Ribbon MOD is perfect with one exception. The Rib2 aren't compatible with my template

Image

That big cyan border above the two small ribbons appears when a small ribbon is awarded.

I'm sure there is a way to make it work, possibly by editing the includes/functions_ribbons.php, but I'm not familiar with script so I don't know where to begin.

As for now, I'm just going to omit the {postrow.USER_RIB2} from the viewtopic_body.tpl. Now that I have my own ribbons installed (animated .gifs work great) I'm almost completely satisfied.

Thanks again for a fantastic MOD. It fits my forum so well.

Btw Brf, just in case you get a second person who wants this MOD, near the end you have

#
#-----[ OPEN ]------------------------------------------
#
templates/subSilver/admin/user_edit_body.php

should be a .tpl

This mod was originally written for a Military-themed board. The admins were former Service members who wanted military-style ribbons.

Your link does not work....

There should be no top-border on the little ribbons, unless it some sort of filler, due to the ribbons being smaller than your user-link pictures. If your link-pictures are taller than the little ribbons, you could always make the ribbons a little bigger.

I figured it out. I had to remove

</td><td>&nbsp</td><td nowrap=nowrap>

from the functions_ribbons.php. Now it works with my template perfectly. Maybe if get this mod past ALPHA more people will use it. I think it's great. I'm using it on my forum [2.0.22] and it doesn't conflict with any of my other MODs (ten plus).
