What to choose... I need input!

Okay, I'm trying to figure out whether I should go ahead and download PHPbb2 or if I should wait for PHPbb3. In choosing this, I am trying to analyze the pros and cons to each one...

Basically, I want to know if it will be easy to upgrade to PHPbb3 on a mod-heavy board, from the persepective of both a programmer and someone who is learning.

Upgrading to phpBB3 when the time comes should be easy, but be aware that all MODs will be lost. It works great on a vanilla board, and only time will tell how it works on a heavily MOD'd board.

Whatever you do, just don't run Olympus in a live environment

Tell me if this is a stupid question, but how long is PHPbb expecting it will be at the moment?

Nobody knows how long it will be Might be tomorrow, might be next year.

As for the MODs, no, you'll have to rewrite them for Olympus yourself or wait for their respective authors to do it.

So I would most likely lose all the mod-related user data too?

Unless the MOD Author releases his or her own upgrade script - some certainly will.

Oh goodness...this is a hard decision. I have three choices:

1. Wait until PHPBB3 comes out.
2. Go ahead and use PHPBB2. Just don't upgrade.
3. Release a beta version of my forums in PHPBB2 to test popularity, attempt to upgrade with mods...but if it doesn't work...just release new site with PHPBB3.

In you guys' opinion...which is the best option?
Either way, the site won't be out for another few months.

EDIT: Will I lose my users when I upgrade...or just my mods?
Also, does anyone know if they are continuing PHPBB2? I mean, will newer versions come out, or no?

You will lose just your mods, as there will be a convertor.
phpBB2 will be continued for a while, I don't know how long.

If you need a forum NOW...
Go with phpBB2.
But don’t install any MODs (besides Nils Birthday MOD and Meik’s Attachment MOD)
Then, once phpBB3 is released, upgrade!! simple!
Upgrading is really a fairly simple process.

If you DON’T need a forum NOW...
Wait for phpBB3 RC1 (at least).
Then just install it and you are good to go.

Well.. Im installing 3.0 as we speak.. on a heavily modded phpBB2

It is a live board.. i dont have many members yet.. who cares if it breaks.. I'll just drop back to 2.0 if it goes to hell.

?? well.. maybe if I had 100's and 100's of members.. but... i have 20 members. and I have known them for a long time. I still have the v2 waiting in the wings...

Conversion went PERFECT. no issues. only issue I seem to have so far is with permissions... its not working like it should. board freezes when trying to set one persons abilities.

but other than that... v3 is fantastic. The admin panel and settings and such and great! cant wait for a full release

Were all your modifications lost?

I think I might just make a board now in 2.0.22 and practice installing mods...then I can be ready when PHPBB3 comes out...I'll release my first board as a beta version of my site...

Do you think this is the best choice?

Will I lose my users? Otherwise, I could go ahead and let people sign up and make sure they are aware of the fact that it is a beta version of the site, and mods will be lost.
