Skins

Post by Concept X »

Hello i own a large IPB skinning site and was thinking about creating a few free phpBB skins, is the latest release of phpBB 3 stable enough to create final skins? as i dont know when you think the final will be released, skinning for V2 might be pointless.

Also by open-source i could download phpBB, make a load of edits, remove/add features etc etc and then start it us as my own forum software?.

With regard to the styles (on phpBB they are called styles, not skins), you should wait until RC1 is released :)

phpBB2 is still going to be supported when phpBB3 is released and thus creating templates for it will be by no means be pointless :) I am sure many people will continue to use it.

phpBB3 is a beta and thus it can change drastically or slightly depending upon certain factors so I would wait till at least the RC release before even contemplating starting a phpBB3 template.
Also by open-source i could download phpBB, make a load of edits, remove/add features etc etc and then start it us as my own forum software?.

You can take the code and produce your own fork of forum software using the phpbb code, however removing the phpBB copyrights from the phpBB php code would be against the license.

Ok thanks for the advice, i'll check out phpBB2 and then wait for final release of phpBB3 then theres less updating if theres any major changes.

The license as in the actual code wrote by the php developers?

Look at the top of any of the PHP files and you'll see what karlsemple means.

One more thing, i'm thinking about creating some new forum software and i haven't the faintest in programming, it will be one heck of an experence, a learn-as-you-go experence lol, can anyone point me in the right direction to the best resources that are relevant?

It would be based on phpBB.

php.net is the best place to start. ;-)
