Inappropriate Material System

Post by iEcstacy »

Hi, I've been lurking around forums and recently I've seen many postings of inappropriate material in places where large amounts of minors access and can view these images, including myself.

There needs to be a system where the IPs of the posters of inappropriate material, in public view where minors can see it, are listed and other forums read from this list and it determines if someone with the listed IPs can join, post, or even vote.

They are spambots and there are plenty of ways to get around them. See the sticky at the top of the 2.0x support forum.

Yes, but on many forums they aren't spambots. Their people who get kicks out of posting rude images.

There are (or should I say will be) mods that will notify admin/moderators of all posts - apart from that there is very little that you can do. It is a problem that everyone who runs a board has to contend with (I have even seen such posts on this board) There are options within phpbb3 (and phpbb2) that allow you to ban users but these people tend to move around so banning email and IP's does not really have much effect. Unfortunately it is a sad sign of the times that we live in - and even more sad for these poor souls who "get off" on doing this!

I would echo and agree 100% with what David said.
There is nothing you can really do to completely stop these people 100%
In addition to that, the best defense is a good offense... a good staff, moderator/admin team can mean the difference for your forum.
As long as your staff has complete control over your board, you’re not going to have a problem with it.

MySpace is a perfect example.
There are not enough moderators to handle that many millions of people, and the rules are much much too loose.
If you’re going to have a board where minors may be visiting or posting, it’s really imperative that you maintain complete control over the board, such as posting strict rules and stipulations regarding indecent content, and enforcing it!! this is the biggest thing I see staff/admins lack at doing right -- enforcing those rules.

I'm half-tempted to find forums you post on and post up a flood of inappropriate images just for your suggestion that someone be labelled for it and prevented from registering on other forums because of their behavior on one. Instead I'll be nice and say that I don't approve of attempting to brand users because of something they do that you don't like.

8O did that need to be said? Inappropriate material is inappropriate material.
If the entire web were family friendly, it would be a much better place… and people would be the better for it.

I think what synaptic is trying to so what is inappropriate. The definitions is not clear about it and depends per person. What i may find inappropriate may find others not.

Whether or not you think the material being posted is inappropriate matters to no one. What matters is: are any laws being broken ?

If the site is breaking the law of the country where its server is being hosted, then you should report them to the relevant authorities.
If the site is breaking a law which is universal (such as child pornography) - report them asap to the authorities regardless of where the server is hosted.

If they are not breaking any laws, then you are wasting your time, you should consider whether or not you believe there should be a law pertaining to your issue, and follow whatever steps in your country/state that a civilian should take to bring possible legal proposals to the local governing bodies and whatnot.
GroovePlugs wrote: Inappropriate material is inappropriate material.
What nonsense - who is to determine what is inappropriate or not ? What is perfectly natural to one person (example video games with gore) may be deemed inappropriate by someone else.
GroovePlugs wrote: If the entire web were family friendly, it would be a much better place… and people would be the better for it.
Again, who is to determine what is family friendly or not ? For example if a family consists of 2 people, a married couple both over the age of 21, legally a porn site is family friendly towards that specific family.

Every country has laws to cover these issues (yes its true many of these laws need updating for the digital age) - but in the end its the laws of the country/state which matter and nothing else.

I think people are mixing up their moral values with legal obligations. I may not agree with the content of some sites out there, but I will fully support their right to publish that content, once they are not breaking any laws.

I disagree. "family friendly" is itself completely subjective, and I can't even take such a suggestion seriously if it's founded on that. There is only one judge of what is or isn't "appropriate" on the web - the person with legal responsibility over the viewer. They are the one who decides what is "family friendly". For many of us, that is ourselves, not some Fundamentalist WC3 disctating moral standards on the web.

It's simply not your call to make for other people, nor is it mine. And I seriously hope you aren't suggesting that this can be handled in the same way as legitimate spam - what is or isn't appropriate varies wildly between individuals, being nowhere near consistent as a repository of spam sites.

Meh, I think you've just done the same thing to iEcstacy.

Besides what he's said is right. I know plenty of people who get kicks out of posting rude-images. Plenty of them were 16 (Guys pretending to be 40 year olds pretending to be 14 chatting up girls) posting random images where they could, spamming teachers with porn sites. Setting their friend's home pages to various sites. Usually they weren't be just naked pictures but the most vilest stuff they could find :P

I don't think this system could work at all, on either ethical, cultural or technical founding. Most people use dynamic IP addresses anyway. If you find an image 'inappropriate', then just scroll down, don't visit the board again, whatever. There cannot be a system of introducing blanket IP bans across multiple, otherwise independent websites because one internet connection somewhere was used one occasion to upload a picture of a woman not wearing a headscarf.

Now, if a breach of the law is being committed, there are authorities to whom to report. There's no need to turn phpBB into one of those authorities.

yeah, even blacklisting forums against spam is difficult based on IPs, this kind of thing definitely would be hard to maintain!
