Re: [DEV]WP-United: phpBB3 - WordPress Integration Mod

Post by Jhong »

It wouldn't be sensible IMO to put WordPress through the phpBB template system -- (a) WordPress already has it's own template system, and (b) there won't be any phpBB template tags in WordPress!

It's not a matter of weak or strong integration -- it's the only way that really makes sense when you think about it.

If you want to add phpBB info to a WordPress non-integrated page, I've provided a ton of WordPress template tags you can use.

What happens is the WordPress page gets grabbed in its entirety, and then gets pushed into a phpBB template variable -- so it appears on a full phpBB page.

The other way around (phpBB inside WordPress), forst compiles the phpBB page, then puts it in WordPress.

We'll see what I come up with when I take a look at the tools I got. ;) Specifically what I wanna do is simply make a wordpress theme or tweak or whatever so that it will match you're current style, so even people with 50+ skins in a skin changer can use those themes and let their users change them on the fly as usual without having to worry about it looking crappy when you view the wordpress blog or vise-versa.

Yes, if all those themes are based on prosilver, and you do a WP theme on prosilver, then it should be easy.

BTW -- more power to you. I had several user-selectable themes i nphpBB2, and quickly canned the idea. A right PITA to keep up to date. I'm far too lazy for that

You made the MOD didn't you? It's more work then the WP theme I'm gunna be doing I'm sure. I'm just here to get noted on what will probably one of the most popular mods for the most popular forum software out there. That and I need something along the lines of this for myself, and I figure it's just courteous to contribute what I have. ;)

Hahah...

Sorry guys!

It's literally, nearly done. I'm just putting the finishing touches on the installer & uninstaller, and tracing a potential bug with the way the settings are stored.

Then, I need to include a little upgrade script for people who have already been using WP-United on phpBB2, to correct a few integration bugs they had.

Then I need to write a couple of lines of CSS.

It's just a few hours work.. (but the missus is glaring at me -- I need to go out too :-) )

Assuming I find no more bugs (I did find a couple which slowed me down), I hope that this can be finished today :-)

Re: [BETA ]WP-United: phpBB3 - WordPress Integration Mod

Post by Jhong »

At last, we have a release for phpBB3 :-)

This is the first public release -- no detailed changelog, although there largely is feature parity with the phpBB2 version.

That said, there are several improvements, including:
-- Improved DTD switching
-- CSS order can be set regardless of integration direction
-- Automatic fix for templates like Ocadia & Almost Spring
-- Included "compatibility" CSS
-- Installer, uninstaller &" resetter"
-- Better user mapper
-- phpBB3 native permissions system used
-- A ton of bug fixes

You can get yours at the Download Page. Instructions for converting from phpBB2 are included.

I'll update the first page of this thread shortly... :-)

Text_MOD_Install_File_v0.5.txt contains an invalid character. Look for "USER_USER". You'll see that the 'L' character is not an 'L' character.

I'm in the WP-United Setup Wizard now, and it's asking for a New Integration Address. I don't want a new integration address. I want my blog to be accessed from the same URL it has been. I don't want phpBB to touch that. What do I do?

Thanks. I'll have a look.... EDIT.. don't see anything there.

Read the instructions :-) If you want to keep the same address, rename blog.php to index.php, and move it to replace WordPress' index.php, then open the file and set the path back to the forum. It hsould all be explained in the Wizard.

It will not work / will screw up if you don't access via the provided file.

YES YES YES!! :D

Thank you for the release!

I didn't get an answer on a previous question of mine though. :( Do I put phpBB and WP in seperate folders? Which goes on the root, etc? I want my site to be set up like your WP-United site, and I'm a little confused on how to do this (because phpBB has an index.php and WP also has an index.php, so I can't put it all on the root).

Thanks a ton for developing this mod, and for help!
