Best way to promote registration.

I was wondering. Do you think it is better to prevent guests from posting or viewing topics completely? If they could read topics they may be inclined to post but may only be there to read. If they need to register to view a topic they may do so to read it and then since they have just registered be much more willing to post.

What do you think? I don't know what's best.

I usually mix the two.

They can read certain sub-forums, but not all of them. Offcourse, having nice discussions and debates helps.

I think that if they need to register to read what is in the topics then they will go away and not come back.
They will probably go to a site where they can read the topics and if they like the look of it they may register and may even post.

Remember that there may well be 100's of site on the same theme as yours so why pause for any longer than it takes to move on to the next one.

Since my forums are reserved for website discussion for when non idiots register I think it is a bad idea to prevent registration to read topics since they already have to register once. I should deffinitely do this to the areas that are related to site. It will also promote people to use the main of my website in hope.

Yeah, I guess it depends on how the board is being used. I will change this when I can.

Usable content would be the best suggestion. I think discussion open for unregistered visitors to read, but registration required for posting or downloading is fair. Downloads take bandwidth and posting/comments (could) take time to manage, so it would be a fair trade to the visitor. If you promise and deliver privacy, most wouldn't mind registering.

That's actually what I did. I now allow guest to view everything but one forum in which registered users get free stuff.

Most of the areas on my forum are viewable by guests but I do have areas that guests can not access.
