bugger! what if i install a new phpbb2 will it work with the existing phpbb3 database?

i am having the too many connections problem as a lot are, it seems my solutions are :-

1 change hosts
2 change back to phpbb2 where we had no errors
3 change to vbulletin and stay with my current hosts

any suggestions?

PhpBB2 and PhpBB3 are completely different and nothing is compatible except for the conversion utility.

A "Too many connections" problem is a limitation by your host, not the software.

Maybe your host has recently forced persistant database connections. Which means the server won't close the connection like it should. phpBB opens a new connection each time you view a page (because it has already requested that the last one be closed), so if they are forcing the connections to stay open, you can hit this error.

i've had my forum running on phpbb for about 6 years now or more and since changing to phpbb3 have had these errors. My hosts disabled my database on sunday and i have begged them to reactivate it which they are reluctant to do until tonight but i'm still waiting.

this is their response today.

"We have re-enabled the database please can you ensure that all mysql connections are closed after the query has been completed, if excessive connections are found again your database may be disabled again."

so what does this mean in simpleton terms?

What exactly does the error say? Is it saying there's too many connections for your database user or just too many in general? If it's the latter, that's usually server-wide. Who's your host? A lot of hosts don't configure their servers very well.

You might ask them about the persistant connections and see what it's set to. If they're enabled, ask them to disable it.

I have the same problem since I upgrade to phpbb3 (it was running for years without this problem in previous versions).

It happened four times since phpbb3 was released. I'm going to ask about persistant connections, I don't know if it's enabled.

UPDATE

i reinstalled PHPBB3 3.0 and my hosts have now reactivated my database so i'm back online after a weeks down time, but i have had to disable the search feature and the bots to stop this happening again. :(
