I've seen many boards remove the copyright... and as a result, I will normally refuse to register with them in anyway and not even mention their board... I, myself never even touch the copyright... I have seen many boards replace the copyright with a picture though. I do think that replacing it with a picture may actually benefit... :? :ugeek: :geek:

Well, for it to benefit phpbb.com you should put the "copyright bla" in the image's alt or title attributes - which defeats the purpose of obfuscating it in the first place. If you don't do that, the search engine won't know what the image depicts and it won't help phpbb.com's ranking. :(

Helping .com's ranking is not the reason we request that the copyright remain in place. :)

The thing is, I don't remove it, but anyway...

all you do is just do something like

Code: Select all

Powered By: <a href="http://www.phpbb.com"><img src="./copyright.png" alt="phpBB" /></a>
And so you're still helping phpBB's ranking because it links to it...

But Highway of Life... The most logical explanation why the phpBB team wants to have a copyright on overall_footer is to tell people that the phpBB team made and and to increase phpBB's ranking... After all... possibly tens maybe hundreds, maybe millions of websites that use phpBB linking back to phpBB will only make phpBB's ranking go higher, which I have nothing against... It is actually good because if you search for support topics or stuff you'll get phpBB's answers first...

No, the most logical explanation is to give credit to those who have spent thousands of hours making this project what it is. It has nothing to do with ranking.

I've recently seen a few boards that are obviously phpBB powered and have removed the copyright  It really irritates me to see that. So much hard work by the phpBB Team has been put into phpBB and the software is free to use, there is no logical reason to remove it and the spam excuse isn't good enough, nor is the "I don't want people to know I'm using Free Software" excuse. I myself would never remove it, it credits phpBB Group for the excellent software and it also spreads the word about phpBB :)

Just wondering how can a simple line of copyright prevent you from completely integrating the software with your site? Just that people can see that you didn't build all of it?
Paying or not as soon as you use software that you didn't write your self, or what you have based on that software you should always leave the copyright there just out of respect for the people that spend time on building it.

just my 2ct.

For paid scripts, you also have to be careful about removing the copyright if they have that restriction in their license.

What I find particularly annoying (even more so than copyright removal) are the sites that show it as being powered by someone else's work when clearly it is phpBB.
That is the ultimate "kick in the teeth" - taking something that was freely given and then passing it off as your own work.

The truth is out there.
Unfortunately they will not let you anywhere near it!

I think it is mostly a sign of respect that is given---most users don't even read the footers. :P

I know that WordPress doesn't really care if you remove their copyright footers, and there are many other ways of finding out if they are using WordPress anyways (looking at their RSS feed's source, for example). Most people don't, but it is still very open.

I find phpBB's footer to be extremely long, and I think it might be wise to change it to something liked "Powered by phpBB" or something to that extend. I realize that prosilver leaves a lot of room for footer text and most people try and add long lines to compensate for this long thing. I know I would be ticked if I used non-phpBB software that had such a long string of text. But hey, I like phpBB so I really don't care. :P

But those are just my opinions and really aren't worth much. ;)

That point has been discussed ad nauseum in this thread. The copyright is formatted as it is because it contains the year of each major revision, which is how they're supposed to be formatted.

What is the point of keeping powered by phpBB text in phpBB2 boards? The support for us will end in a few days. :) 80% of the phpBB forums on the internet are phpBB2. I think all this people have to take out that text because the support is over for some time, just not official... But who ask help for phpBB2, rarelly receives it.

After 1 cotomber I will take out that text. :)
