Hehehe... really? :) I rarely ever come in the phpBB2 boards anymore, so I wouldn't know. Anyway, I think this type of thing is what tooltips were invented for. I completely understand it if people don't know about them, but it's such a simple concept, I doubt anyone would forget when they're told once. Throw in a nice screenshot like Kevin's and you're all set, I'd say.

The red star means it's a topic that you have posted in.

Here is how I posted it on my site (just a modification of Kevin Clark's original post). Just post it as a Global Announcement. May help someone :D :

This is a summary of the new topic icons and what they mean.

Two general points
- Red icons are unread items, blue/grey are read
- A star on any thread means you have posted in it

For example:
Image - Read topic (No one has posted to this topic since your last visit.)
Image - Unread topic (Someone has posted to this topic since your last visit.)
Image - Read topic that you have posted in
Image - Unread topic that you have posted in

Other icon definitions (the blue=read / red=unread rule applies to these as well)
Image - Announcements from the administrators.
Image - Sticky thread
Image - Hot topic
Image - Locked thread
Image - Moved thread
Image - Forum with subforums
Image - Link forum

More icons:
Image - Attachment
Image - Go to last post in the thread
Image - Go to last unread post in the thread
Image - Subforum read
Image - Subforum unread

Code: Select all

Not meaning to steal your credit mate ;) . I just revised your original layout...changed some things around and added some things so that it would be clearer to noobies for my site...not trying to take credit for your post. It's not quite the same as yours, but is based on your layout.

I'm completely lost here - how DO we turn tooltips on for the icons?
Here's a bit of source - the round images which no-one seems to understand have no tooltip (alt text)

Code: Select all

<dl class="icon" style="background-image: url(./styles/prosilver/imageset/topic_read_hot_mine.gif); background-repeat: no-repeat;">
But the latest post icon does

Code: Select all

<img src="./styles/prosilver/imageset/icon_topic_latest.gif" alt="View the latest post" title="View the latest post" width="11" height="9"></a> <br>on 07 Aug 2008 14:14</span>
Where might I be going wrong?!

A bit of ageism creeping into this topic - watch out guys because I am watching you. ;)
I know you put a smiley, but believe it or not, in some countries people are so silly they might miss your smiley take your post seriously!
Of course, ageism is active discrimination against older people for the purposes of any opportunity.
Jim_UK et al are discussing the user base of a certain forum being older, so actually, it's ANTI-ageism as they are trying to help :)

It depends on the browser. Internet Explorer actually renders the alt attribute in image tags incorrectly, putting that text in the tooltip. The proper attribute to use for tooltips on images is the title attribute. Firefox/Mozilla/Opera/Safari render this properly.

<img src="foo.png" alt="Text that will display if the image can't load" title="This text will be in the tooltip" />

Even in IE, though, the title attribute will overrule the alt attribute to display in tooltips. :)

Thanks Adam. Does this mean that these round topic icons that don't have alt OR titles do not have them at all? Where would I start digging in the code to add these back?

For image tags in the template files, it's as simple as adding the title attribute and then using the appropriate template variable to fill in the value.

Whereas with dl tags using CSS to bring in the image as a background image, phpBB accomplishes the tooltip with the dt tag following, and inside of the dl. For example, in forumlist_body.html, we find the following code:

Code: Select all

<dl class="icon" style="background-image: url({forumrow.FORUM_FOLDER_IMG_SRC}); background-repeat: no-repeat;">
	<dt title="{forumrow.FORUM_FOLDER_IMG_ALT}">
And in viewforum_body.html, the following:

Code: Select all

<dl class="icon" style="background-image: url({topicrow.TOPIC_FOLDER_IMG_SRC}); background-repeat: no-repeat;">
	<dt<!-- IF topicrow.TOPIC_ICON_IMG and S_TOPIC_ICONS --> style="background-image: url({T_ICONS_PATH}{topicrow.TOPIC_ICON_IMG}); background-repeat: no-repeat;"<!-- ENDIF --> title="{topicrow.TOPIC_FOLDER_IMG_ALT}"><!-- IF topicrow.S_UNREAD_TOPIC --><a href="{topicrow.U_NEWEST_POST}">{NEWEST_POST_IMG}</a> <!-- ENDIF --><a href="{topicrow.U_VIEW_TOPIC}" class="topictitle">{topicrow.TOPIC_TITLE}</a>
		<!-- IF topicrow.S_TOPIC_UNAPPROVED or topicrow.S_POSTS_UNAPPROVED --><a href="{topicrow.U_MCP_QUEUE}">{topicrow.UNAPPROVED_IMG}</a> <!-- ENDIF -->
		<!-- IF topicrow.S_TOPIC_REPORTED --><a href="{topicrow.U_MCP_REPORT}">{REPORTED_IMG}</a><!-- ENDIF --><br />
		<!-- IF topicrow.PAGINATION --><strong class="pagination"><span>{topicrow.PAGINATION}</span></strong><!-- ENDIF -->
		<!-- IF topicrow.ATTACH_ICON_IMG -->{topicrow.ATTACH_ICON_IMG} <!-- ENDIF -->{L_POST_BY_AUTHOR} {topicrow.TOPIC_AUTHOR_FULL} {L_POSTED_ON_DATE} {topicrow.FIRST_POST_TIME}
	</dt>

How are the 'template variables ' accessed if I want to change the text in the title?
