Change the role for the Bots group to "No Access".

phpBB3 has a feature that allows you to, as you've noticed, configure bots to have special permissions (hence the bot list, they don't show up as registered users as they are obviously not). Their purpose is spidering pages for search engines (not sure where you're getting this "NSA spybot" stuff...), and no, there is no "back door" -- the bots will follow the bots permissions (assuming they're on the bots list). If they're not on the bots list (all major ones are), they'll assume the guest permissions.

Change the role for the Bots group to "No Access".
Thanks. Although I believe I had that as the setting when I went into permissions and changed their role to "never". Anyway, I'll try that again.

BTW, php/bb suggests not deleting any bots from the list as it may cause problems. Has anybody deleted bots and had a problem?

For one, they'll become guest accounts, making you have no control over them. If you delete them through the database, Bad Things™ will happen, but if you do it via the actual feature I don't think it will. I've never actually tried it as it accomplishes nothing.

I managed to hide the bots by changing the view online status of each of them and changing one of the bots group permissions.

Code: Select all

update `phpbb_users` set user_allow_viewonline=0 WHERE `user_id` between 12534 and 12583
ACP -> USERS & GROUPS -> Groups' permissions -> Advanced permissions -> Can hide online status -> yes

Where did you place that?

I ran this as a SQL query. You need to use the tool that you used to manage the database, eg phpMyAdmin.

wsz's method is by far the best. You could also run the query by group_id, using the Bots Group id:

Code: Select all

update `phpbb_users` set user_allow_viewonline=0 WHERE `group_id` = 121
Check to see what the group ID is for a Bot, first. Mine is 121.

Any considerations if the aforementioned changes to hide Bots from the Who Is Online list work in 3.06?

Nicely done, worked like a charm. All the bots are hidden from registered users and the questions will stop.

Thank you!

You should hide by group_id as Steve said, not by user_id. It's simpler (finding one ID instead of two) and more robust (especially if you add more bots yourself).
