There are no converters from 3x to 2x.

phpBB3 has subforums built in though.

PhpBB3 might have sub forums, but I'm trying to integrate my forums with a custom build site, and phpBB just isn't modular enough for it.

when you convert from 2 to 3, your version 2 board stays intact.
Unless you delete the version 2 database, there is no need for a converter to go back, you simply stop using the version 3 board and start using the version 2 board again.

I didn't realize that the databases were completely the same..Why the need for the conversion script then?

That's not what he said.
When you convert from 2x to 3x is does not physically convert the database. It reads the information and converts/moves it into the new phpBB3 database. The original database is untouched and still works but the two databases are not interchangeable.

Oh I think I understand now that I am looking through the data base. Thanks for pointing that out. What it does is convert the info in the phpbb2 database to a new phpbb3 database but leaves the phpbb2 intact and thankfully does not delete it.

Did I get it right this time?

Correct.

This is so you can reconvert if necessary and so it is not catastrophically destructive to the original working board.

Thanks Kev I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I may have to convert the phpbb3 database anyway though because I didn't know this before 2 months of additional posts..*Sigh*

I'm going to try it both ways just to make sure I don't loose the whole thing...First I am going to backup that precious phpbb2 file, then I'm going to try to convert the phpbb3 file. If it blows up in my face I will still have the phpbb2 less 2 months of posts..

Thank Kev.Image
