Copyright

Post by madguy »

I can't remove copyright notice at the bottom of every page. But, can I modify it (fore security reasons)? I have to leave it as

Code: Select all

Powered by phpBB &copy; 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007 <a href="http://www.phpbb.com/">phpBB Group</a>
or I can change it to

Code: Select all

This board uses <a href="http://www.phpbb.com/">phpBB3</a>.

Many hackers just google "Powered by phpBB" and hack boards that they find. Oh, well.

They try and hack boards that are out of date. You would also be one in several hundred thousand, if not million boards. The vast majority of boards that have been hacked are either out of date (or a MOD is) or the exploit is not in phpBB, it's in something else on the server.

You can include the required linked language as an image - that would take care of your concerns.

Even if you alter (or some people just flat remove) the copyright for "Security Reasons" it is still easy to find phpBB boards, all you have to do is google for 'viewtopic.php' or any other unique file name that phpBB uses and there you go ;)

Why hide? The latest version of phpBB has no known security vulnerabilities, and as soon as one is found they are fixed in the next update anyway.

Changing the Powered by phpBB line would not do anything, I found out that even having a link from phpBB.com would result in hackers trying to hack old phpBB2 boards (lucky I'm not using phpBB2).

The best you can do is to make sure you have only safe PHP scripts on your site and to keep phpBB up to date.

also, in the past, when the hackers were doing this, google etc. would not allow that type of search for very long.
the last time I tried to run that search over and over again, google gave me an error saying it was not allowed.

so, I think you are worrying about nothing.
