Buttons translation; what am I supposed to to with the GDK?

Post by Laurentio »

I spent many hours last night reading through the 7 pages long "prosilver GDK v0.1 for translators" thread and researching what a GDK is and what to do with it, but to little avail.

I finally found out that GDK is a photoshop file, and that it could possibly be opened with the GIMP (gimp.com) graphics program. But after experimenting and reading the GIMP manual for 5 hours I still haven' figured out the two very basic questions:

1) How to change the contents of the text layers (i.e. how to translate the phrases), and

2) If I ever manage to change the text, then what am I supposed to do with the GDK to turn it into working gif-files with the right dimensions!

The 2-3 people who asked similarly basic questions in the above mentioned thread were ignored, so I'm starting a new thread in the hope that somebody will see it and respond.

Thanks in advance!

The text is stored in separate layers and you should be able to edit it with the common Text Tool.

After you are finished, you have to slice the file up (I'm not sure at the moment if it is), that means to cut out shapes you will want to save as separate files. Then you will need to Export or Save for web the file, that should create a directory with all the sliced up files.

I'm using Photoshop terms and names for functions here, I hope they are similar in GIMP.

Thanks for the reply, Ameeck.

In GIMP, it seems you can only use the text tool to generate new text. (That you will have to apply the correct font and size to manually - and also place it manually, which seems impossible to do with accuracy.)

I get the impression that GIMP doesn't recognize the text layers as text, but just as pieces of graphic. In any case I can't see any option to change the text anywhere!

So I'm guessing maybe GIMP simply can't perform these tasks (at least not with this file)? Do you (or anybody else) know if there's a another free program that can?

Maybe I should just go back to my original plan wich was to edit each gif-file separately with Paint(!) or Getpaint.net - Maybe it won't be as pretty, but it seems the only feasible solution...?
