New alternate french spelling translation

Post by Louis Gugenheim »

Hello,

We have already translated phpBB in alternate french spelling (ortograf altèrnativ) and we want to make it available for all.

Alternate french spelling is a simplified spelling use mainly by people with language or intellectual disabilities.

Some organizations and bodies such as 'City of MOntreal' use already the Ortograf alternativ.
ex: http://ville.montreal.qc.ca/pls/portal/ ... ve/accueil

What is the procces to go on with the publication of this translation ?

Thank you.

Hello,

I ask myself... Why validated this translation? I don't understand.

The phpBB-fr.com translation is better than this translation. I'm Belgian and I prefer the phpBB-fr.com translation. ;)

See you soon,

This translation is probably different in some way.

As has been indicated in the posts above, ameeck has had a look at it, and he has given approval to this translation, than it should obviously have had its value and being different from the other French translation. We're not going to debate here which translation "is better"... Both translators have worked hard for their translation and everyone can choose the one he likes the most.

If ameeck sees the need for this, he might be able to explain his decision of adding this translation and the reason why this translation has its value. :)

Dakin Quelia: I have approved this translation as just another language pack. The traditional French package is available and I expect it to be the primary choice for the majority of users.

First of all, I see no reason to limit any translations (apart from some obvious reasons) if such a translation has not been made. The goal of localizations is to spread phpBB as far as we can and in as many variations as possible.

As you said, another language pack suits your needs better, so use it, it's meant for you. Some other users might be interested in this one.

Somebody could object in a similar way when talking about Esperanto for example. If someone will translate phpBB to Klingon or elvish, then I have no objections as long as it is a serious and complete translation. With the current system, language packs are in an equal list. We are preparing a new one and these translations will not be displayed on first sight (some language packs will be served primarily according to your browser's language), but will still be available to download.

The French translation made by phpBB-fr.com is Standard French. Not traditional. :)

The most used package. ;)

Dakin,

try Klingon one, this will be awesome

Others will try Ch'tis version, Schtroumpf version, verlant version, bourré version,...

Yes because the Belgian French contains certain differences with the French. If the translation is done seriously and can be used to help some users to use phpBB in a language they prefer, it's good.

This works also with certain dialect, like the "Ch'tit" (which is almost similar to the Belgian French).

@Xaphos
Sorry to have "erased" your name from this language french based on work. I did not want to link you to the controversial "ortograf altèrantiv" package without your acceptation. I will put it back according to the licence in the next 2 weeks. I cannot reply to your personal message (not enough post in the forum apparently...)

This alternate french spelling is not another weird translation as Klingon or elmer fudd. Il is uses, for instance, by people with language or intellectual disabilities. You can find some sites offering an interface in "ortograf altèrnativ', like the city of Montreal (ex. http://www.ville.montreal.qc.ca/pls/por ... ve/accueil )
