[DEV] Blend Portal System (Latest: 1.1.0)

Post by aUsTiN-Inc »

I was waiting till i got a decent version (Bug fixes, etc..) before posting it here. I will include a change log, hope thats ok & also a little description.

Basically i started "Online" with Nuke, what a mistake. Seems every "New" version is 10x worse on security issues etc.. But i wont go into that as it might be considered dis-respectfull. Anyhow i switched to phpbb. At the time i was not big into phpbb, nor their sites. So i took on the challenge of a portal. I was used to nukes configurability, so that was a key. Blocks had to be moveable, up & down, left & right etc.. Messages, "Modules", "Content", yada yada ;-). So thats what i made. Altho its not the conventional PHP => TPL setup, this was how i did it. To me php & tpl use is double coding, more work, harder on the brain etc..lol So i use just phps, yes there are a couple downfalls to it, but for the most part it works like a charm. Im not trying to over-ride the convetional ways, nor say they are good/bad, wrong/right, this is just how i do things.

Anyhow heres the changelog, thanks for reading. I will use the code tag since i already have it typed all nice & neat.

Page Generation Time: 10.8517

That really doesn't give an impressive look for this portal! Ten seconds per page = pain.

Edit Wow, forum front page 33.1339...

Actually its not the portal, before you judge, there are 6 sites on this server, one of which has going on 7k members & uses roughly 3 GB's bandwidth/day, so the server being lagged, isn't exactly a wise judgement. Also a foot note,

*Note*
Added a few for ya =-)

Here are some SS's
-> 0.2008 <-
-> 0.83 <-
-> 0.3233 <-
-> 0.0607 <-
-> 0.6954 <-

Connection Speed Maybe?

Just a thought...lol, your viewing /forums/ which is the site described above, if you get attacked all day, server load above 45 & 50 when it should be under 1.0 & you use 2.5-3 GB's / day in Bandwidth, i would like to see a better load time. So for all Blend purposes, try using the Blend link in my sig... Thanks.

The header & footer are cut off of addons, all credits are on every page, with the exception, if you declare the header & footer on the addons, ya end up with a template error. If i can find a way to bypass it, i dont mind adding it =-)

With about 3 GB of traffic day and a decent server, I think non-modded phpBB performed each page in about a second (and one with eXtreme Styles and heavy traffic mods a lot faster). I might remember wrong, my own bigger site has only about 300 MB daily traffic. Anyways, you shouldn't had that site as an example ;)

Connection speed doesn't matter with page generation time, because it is the time the server required to process the page. It doesn't count in the time it took the user to query and to send user the page.

Btw, you really should add phpBB credits to your other site. It is very impolite to take it off.

Oh yes, and in the other hand I don't have much interest on portals. I'm only curious what people see in portals, I don't like the concept myself all that much. Atleast the portal appears to be working fine.

I never had my homepage as the example... Blend is linked in my sig, not my homepage...lol Not gonna argue, simple mistake,mine or yours it matters not as its resolved =-)

As for the phpBB logo & (c), the only thing its not on is the Addons, so if you can show me somewhere else, i'll be glad to look at it, & it is still on the bottom of the page, when viewing addons =-)

*Edit*

At second look on my main site is is removed. But its no biggie to fix =-)

*Fixed*

Code: Select all

        {ADMIN_LINK}</span></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td background="templates/GorbGreen/head/footile.png" width="1"><img src="templates/GorbGreen/head/footcapl.png" width="11" height="68"></td>
      <td background="templates/GorbGreen/head/footile.png" width="1"><a href="http://www.phpbb.com" target="phpbb"><img src="templates/GorbGreen/head/phpbbcr.png" width="203" height="68" border="0" alt="powered by phpbb"></a></td>
It was there, so i unno, but i just manually added the link after the ADMIN_LINK set... Thanks!

Page Generation Time: 0.2922 :D

Thanks for the copyright link. No matter anything else, that's the only way you'll get support around here ;)

Looks nice! I'll be sure to fiddle with it... :D

Despite some criticism here and there, I urge you to continue development (at your own pace of course).

Errors will be made and solutions will come from them. The whole portal issue (whether or not a portal for 2.2 will be made by the phpbb-team) should gain more interest. There is no better portal but there are portals which suit one's needs better. And your (or anybody else's) portal will be looked at by the team (I'm sure) and might have some influence on the system used in the future.

I haven't tried your portal but will (time allowing) test it in the near future. Currently it's looking good and I'm enticed to put it on top of my "try list".

BTW, ok, a credit to phpbb was missing somewhere, guys, this is beta (edit: not even still basic development) and things are bound to be not conform the "rules" here and there. Give the guy some leeway, mention the error but at least let him live long enough or the error will never be solved :lol:
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.
