If you are running 3.0.6, then you can take away permission for "Newly Registered Users" to send PMs.

I am sorry, support for phpBB2 ended in 1-Jan-2009.

The only support we can now offer is to help you update to phpBB3.

I think I have to agree with the original poster here. I understand phpbb wants people to upgrade to their most recent efforts but not everybody wants to do that, or even finds it a tempting proposition. I mean, and you may find this hard to believe, but v3x is over-bloated in a great many ways that my visitors just will not abide. Like it or not, I'm not interested in sending my visitors looking for other sites to visit. All we are asking is for something simple. For example

if private message == true && poster_count < 10 then
redirect to index page
fi

I have EXreaction's ACP installed on phpbb v2 and it's done everything I could want (until recently). Limiting private message ability "should" be the only touch up required.

A few reasons why people resist upgrading to version phpbb 3x
- lose styles (I either have to change the look of my site, or re-invent the wheel)
- unruly user profile pages
- phpbb v4 (which means we have to upgrade yet again - will this madness never stop?)
- no guaranty upgrades won't just exchange old problems for new ones.

Don't get me wrong, I love what you guys have done and what you continue to do. That's why I use phpbb and would like to continue using it. I'm just asking that you have a heart and take a bit of pity on us poor sods who don't want to alienate our visitors or throw away everything we've done until now (much of it years old).

Hello,

We're not forcing you to convert to phpBB3 and actually have no way of doing so. We are, however, no longer supporting it, mostly because the codebase does not meet our standards. As the vendor, it s our right to do so, of course, and I hope you can understand that. Our resources are limited and difficult decisions have to made about where support should be focused.

You should understand that by using software (any software) past its end-of-life date, you take it upon yourself to support it. You can still add whatever features you like to it, we're just not going to assist you with it. That is, after all, what end of support means.

If my users felt that phpBB3 had too many features, I would remove whatever they don't like. You don't even have to remove the backend code, just the template markup. If it doesn't show up, then it's not going to get in the way. Likewise, lots of things can be disabled in the administration panel. I would do this rather than attempting to hold on to phpBB2.

You have more ways than you acknowledge. From where I sit, your leverage is glaringly apparent.

>> You can still add whatever features you like to it, we're just not ...
>> If ... phpBB3 ... I would remove whatever they don't like.

You talk in circles. Add a line here, or remove a line there. Doesn't seem so different to me. Still, that's your choice, and while I can't agree with your priorities, it is, as you rightly point out, your prerogative.

However, since we're here... I recall a particularly nasty 'Santy' worm a few years back that exploited some little seam that existed between phpbb and the php program that was sewn up with a snippet no longer than a half dozen lines. I am not suggesting you open the floodgates on phpBB2 for fixes and updates, but in light of this new wave of pm bot I think it a bit hard hearted to begrudge a similar few lines. But since I am not a php programmer, if you're content to let the latest ads for watches and viagra be branded with the phpbb name until I can learn what I'm doing well enough (on ANY phpbb version) to figure out how to apply a fix myself, then I don't see how I can possibly object.

For the interested, casual reader a very astute forum member has observed that disabled members have been able to update their profile, most notably their avatar. Where in this process they are sending spam pm's is more than I can guess at this stage of things.

Again, I don't think you understand what end of support means. One cannot end support for a product without ending support for that product. We do not recommend using phpBB2 at all because it does not meet our increasing standards (as I have pointed out). You are asking us to continue offering assistance with a product that we no longer recommend the usage of.

Phineus4 wrote:You talk in circles.

You want to keep using the product past its support period, and yet you want us to continue supporting it (at least partially). Furthermore you also admit that it is our prerogative to end support for our products.

sorry first for my english but i hope you can understund what i write here

Marshalrusty understund what is meaning to move from one phpbb to a totally new phpbb because there was a long and hard work to bring the site to the right way.
and to move from that point again to a complett new program is really hard for some people specially for me coz i don't really nothing about php and css and all the the rest.

coming to the right point where the site looks and works good
take's a long time
but this means not that you people doing wrong and developing a new and better phpbb3 and maybe goes to 4 and 5 6 and so on.
you try just to make a better phpbb for all people who used phpbb on site and i really appreciate it
