I believe Apple both use and contribute to open source projects and share many technologies but developing an operating system as a whole should rightly belong to them if they so choose. They can choose to use it solely for themselves, which is what they have done. Flash is used by many devices which makes it different.
Why? You haven't provided any reason for why you feel this way.

Also, Apple contributes to open source projects? They may contribute to some open standards (and they'll definitely tell you that they do everywhere), but what OSS projects have they contributed to?

Webkit is the first one that comes to mind.

Can a moderator split the topic regarding Apple's stance on Flash into a new topic?
Perhaps: “Apple Defends it’s Decision to Ignore Flash on Mobile Devices”.

Thanks!

This is incorrect. The code within the releases for the iPhone since version 1.0 - 1.1.4, 2.0 - 2.2.1, 3.0 - 3.1.3 for their:
  • JavaScriptCore (BSD/LGPL)
  • WebCore (BSD/LGPL)
  • cctools (APSL/GPL)
  • gcc (GPL)
  • gdb (GPL)
  • and ld64 (APSL)
Are all available for download, and have been. Am I missing something?

You forget Darwin, but that's not the basis for the iPhone OS afaik.

It is - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_(operating_system)

It's really the base operating system used in OSX and the iPhone OS but it's open-source, which is nice.

Apple sold it’s one millionth iPad on Friday, 28 days after it’s release. In contrast, it took Apple 74 days to sell 1 million iPhones.

I had no clue that it would be anywhere near as popular as the iPhone, let alone more popular... I can’t believe a million people found it useful already.

It's not that surprising. The iphone would have something to do with it. People like Apple more now than they did before the iphone became more and more popular.

It's a great device.

For me though it's missing too many things that I need, and want, for the amount of $$$ that Apple is asking for it.

I'm not surprised by the sales though. Apple is on a hot streak. To be honest, at this point, regardless of what Apple put out people are going to jump on it.

I’d love an iPad as well... I just can’t justify the price at the moment, but I certainly would find it very useful - for data consumption. It may work as a music book as well, which makes it much much more valuable to me.

Having just used the new iPad for the first time I have to say that I am really taken by it. Instant on instant off internet browsing, thats enough to want it not to mention all the other cool things it could be used for. The personal assistant is on the way.

Hey, people were saying exactly what they said about the iPod. They were even reduced to laughing at the name.

Billions of iPod sales later...

Seriously, Apple have done it again.

One thing about the iPad...

It makes you realize just how bad the Kindle is ;)

I thought some may get a kick out of a bit of stupidity (if you ever want stupidity, ComputerWorld is a great place to look).
She wrote that 17% of iPad buyers are making their purchase instead of a handheld video game player; 28% instead of an e-book reader; and 41% instead of the iPad Touch.

No surprises there, at least to me. Here's the surprising bit: 27% of iPad purchases will be made instead of a desktop PC, and 44% instead of a laptop!
Yes, you read that right, 157% of the sales of iPads is in taking over the sales of various markets.
My college-student son has embraced the iPad full time, and has been neglecting his big-screen laptop. He does need multitasking, however, so he's considering a second iPad and carrying two.

I'd link to the article, but I refuse to give a link-back to the abhorrent place called computerworld.

As a Kindle owner, I was thinking about that. I do a lot of reading on my touch and iPhone and really enjoy the eye candy, but if I had to choose just one, I'd still pick the Kindle, for two reasons: the inclusion of the data package and the battery life. That's just me, of course. :)
We should talk less, and say more.

The obvious reason why the kindle is better for reading books, is because it is a e-reader. It's designed for the job and uses pleasant e-ink.
