"Log me on automatically each visit" stopped working

Post by Gingko »

Hello,

I had a PhpBB forum 3.0.5 installed on a home server, and it has worked perfectly for years (was even 2.0.x before).

But now I upgraded the whole server by renting a dedicated hosting in a datacenter, and I moved everything there.

Old server was Linux RedHat 9 with Apache 1.3.27, PHP 5.2.6 and MySQL 5.0.67.
New server is Linux Debian 5.0.4 Lenny (64 bit) with Apache 2.2.9, PHP 5.3.2 and MySQL 5.1.46.

The PhpBB installation itself is exactly the same. Actually, I moved all the files, and also the MySQL databases using rsync, so there cannot be any difference in configuration.
The new server uses exactly the same domain names than the previous one, I only changed the IP address on the administration interface of my registrar.

But now, after upgrading, my users are complaining that the "Log me on automatically each visit" checkbox no longer works when they log in : they have to type their user names and passwords on each visit.

Due to the nature of the moving, I think that the problem may very necessarily reside in the Apache or PHP or MySQL installation configuration (the php.ini file has some differences, for example).
Some differences also exist in web server paths or file owners and permissions, as I choose a different policy than before in that matter (but I cannot see any error message anywhere).

Please could somebody helps me in solving this problem, or could somebody helps me in finding informations about the underlying mechanism of the "Log me on automatically each visit" option in order to allow me to debug it?

Best regards,

Gingko

Well, your cookies look fine. Have you set Allow persistent logins to Yes in the ACP, Security settings?

Yes, it is set to "Yes".
As inherited from the previous server.

After a lot of searches, I think now that this is a problem with PHP 5.3.2 itself : the $_COOKIE super-global array is not always correctly populated with received cookies (but cookies works however in simple test cases, so I don't know exactly what is needed for triggering this bug).

I posted a bug report yesterday on the PHP web site. I got a reply saying that maybe phpBB developers could help them in finding the bug.

For now, I just downgraded my PHP installation to 5.2.13, and the problem has gone.

Hi

I came here to try to find a solution to my problem which is the same as Ginko describes above.
Only that I have a really ancient version of php 4.3.11.

So I'm wondering if there might be any other news about this?
