Newly Registered User Group Function Not Working

Post by GoleyC »

To stop the on-slot of spam, we upgraded our forum to the latest release: 3.0.9.

We did a complete full package upgrade, so that any template changes on the old system would be removed. We did the upgrade, which went fine and replaced all the file with the ones provided during the upgrade. But, to make sure that we removed any possible code corruptions, we did a complete full package flush. This was done by uploading the full phpbb package to a new directory, then renaming the old forum directory to forum-backup and then renaming the new directory to the old directory name. Everything looks and run great.

To limit the amount of spam, we also implemented the "New Member Post Limit" and input "5" so that any new members first five post have to be moderated.

However, new accounts, these accounts just created the same day, are still able to post new topic/post without going to the moderation queue. I'm confused as to why they are not going into the moderation queue.

Is there something we have missed? We also made the Newly Registered Users Group the default group.

What else do we need to look into to get this feature working?

It will only apply to new accounts made after you set the limit to 5.

By the way, in the update you will have added Q&A captcha which will stop them even getting past the registration page in the first place.

How to configure Q&A
  1. ACP> Spambot countermeasures> Installed plugins> click the dropdown box and select Q&A (it will be greyed out)
  2. Click the configure button then click add.
  3. Add your question and answer (you need a Q&A for each language you have installed) click submit.
  4. Click 'back to previous page' then click 'back'
  5. Select Q&A from the dropdown box (again)
  6. Click submit at the bottom of the page.
  7. Done.

We already have Q&A's setup.

But we still notice new users being able to post without going to the queue. This is just not for spam prevention but to help moderate the board more easily.

What would cause it to not function, when setup?

Is it the address in your profile?

Oh and your Q&A is no good because it's something you can google the answer to. Bots can do that.
It needs to be something you can't search like
Enter the last 4 letters of this code

No, our address is not in our profile, that is another website I visit.

But, I'll bring that up to that boards admin.

So, back to my queue questions, why wouldn't it function like it should?

We need the address to at least see what might be going on for new users.

Make sure that new accounts are actually in that group. If the new member post limit is on, they will go in to that and the registered users group for the duration of the limit.

Thanks, we've applied the role permissions to all the forums for that new registration group. We'll do some testing and make sure it works.
