Nice work guys, I like the idea of the rules extensions.
Please note that I will not be porting any of my mods to phpBB 3.1. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

This is great. I've been suggesting officially-supported extensions for a while.

Is there any possibility that the extensions team will work with developers to remove lesser-used features from the core and turn them into extensions?

That could happen; we've not discussed that so far however.

There are a couple feature removal ideas in ideas, some more controversial than others.

Removing features should be approached with great care. An extension to provide the removed functionality should be available prior to the feature being removed. It should be made clear in the release topic for new versions if any functionality has been removed, and should probably link to the appropriate extension. More than just providing an extension, we need to have a way for current relevant data to be migrated for use in the extension (probably when removing the feature, don't remove the data, and make the extension use the current schema) so that it doesn't have to be all set up again.

In any case, feature should only be removed when absolutely necessary, or when such features become outdated or obsolete.

Is there any chance to bring vQmod to phpBB 3.1?

(Like with OpenCart where you can install extensions via .xml files without messing with its core files.)

That is not required because we already have our own system for allowed edit-less feature additions (events) for extensions.

Off the top of my head, Jabber (but add an abstracted notification system), Friends/Foes, Mass E-mail, Birthdays, etc. You can read about some others where I first proposed officially supported plug-ins.

The point is to keep the phpBB core "lean" (a value often espoused here). As mentioned in the linked topic, you could create a phpBB 3.0 (or 3.1 now?) compatability pack of extensions. Now, if the lean argument is just used at somebody's whim, then keep things as they are.

The team will likewise produce and maintain officially-supported extensions.
