*IT IS POSSIBLE* ProBoards/Forums.net to phpBB?

Converting from other board software? Good decision! Need help? Have a question about a convertor? Wish to offer a convertor package? Post here.

*IT IS POSSIBLE* ProBoards/Forums.net to phpBB?

Post by SimianSteam »

I was wondering if anyone had started work on a ProBoards/Forums.net to phpBB converter since ProBoards has given it's users a way out.

For those that aren't aware, ProBoards launched a 'Premium' service called forums.net. It's tiered, low end 9.99 a month, and one of the upgrades is that you can download your DB. It does require a 6 month commitment if you're moving from ProBoards to Forums.net, but $60 is worth it to me to get off that crappy platform.

If work hasn't started yet I'm willing to chip in some cash to help it along.

That applies to normal ProBoards sites still, but Forums.net uses ProBoards v5 software, and the database is downloadable. Basically anyone with ProBoards can get out for $60, assuming there were converters in place.

Here's more info, such as it is: https://forums.net/

I'm not aware of Forums.net, however please may I clear some information I'm missing with you? Firstly if my research is correct; to download a Forums.net database, you must have used their service for at least six months? If you're a ProBoards user, you can upgrade to Forums.net for $60 (or is that for a database dump)?

At the moment, I don't think a converter exists for Forums.net, for any forum software I believe. However I am willing to create one, but I don't have a Forums.net database. Would it be possible to obtain a copy, perhaps from any Forums.net user? I just need a basic structure. I don't need a live database, just some with sample data.

By the way, is Forums.net popular enough? Do many users utilise that forum software/service? Would creating a converter assist a large amount of users?

All the best.

Edit: Uhh, looking at the demo of this software, this is some "ugly" design.

As far as I can tell, Forums.net forum data can be exported at any time, and according to the FAQ, ProBoard users can migrate to Forums.net with a 6-month contract, so effectively, exporting ProBoard data costs ($10/month) * (6 months) = $60

Writing such a converter should help those stuck with ProBoard, and are willing to pay a fee to get out, or just people who don't want to pay for Forums.net anymore, and want to self-host.
