Hopefully down the road there will be a better way to install extensions, as in, not having to guess and or rename the directory ( because of case sensitive, etc ) in order for phpbb software to recognize it in acp.

This is the role of the extension developer (He has to say where you should put the directory). It could also be done by the distributed package (like for the MODs)

Christian could you be tempted to do some 3.1 styles? :D

4 styles in 3.1 development so far and you have made so many gorgeous phpBB styles for us in the past!!

For you to say you're very impressed with 3.1 certainly bodes well :D

It's nice to see such progress being made on 3.1, it's been a long time coming, so it's good to see BETA, RC, etc. Can't wait.

Absolutely! Probably kick off with a few premium first, then upgrade and modernise some of the old freebies to 3.1. Removing imagesets and using CSS class names to differentiate icons opens up the doors for some really cool customisation :)

That would be up to the Extension author to properly package it. I don't see how you would need to do this on a regular basis and is not a requirement of actually installing extensions.

Ok, the talk is that Automod is obsolete? How so if you cannot upload mods via the ACP in 3.1.0 as Automod does...or is there something I'm missing because I see no way to currently do this in RC1? Uploading via the ACP is how most modern forums and blogs do things to make their software more user-friendly. Will this be implemented in future RC releases and just not in this release or not at all?

If uploading for extensions and styles via the ACP are not inplemented in 3.1.0 then Automod is still VERY much wanted and needed, imo!

There is no such thing as MODs anymore, MODs are replaced with extensions, which just need to be uploaded into the right folder, and after that need to be enabled in your ACP.

Unlike updating from phpBB 2.0 to 3.0 which was a conversion, 3.0 to 3.1 is an update and therefore things such as the automatic file updater can be used. It would be exactly like an upgrade from 3.0.x to another 3.0.x release except the changeset is huge and should you have modifications you're highly likely to have conflicts & breakages which is why we recommend a fresh file set. The boards don't run along side each other. However, if you're running vanilla phpBB without any code changes then using the automatic updater should work fine for you.
what occurs to me is that a fresh file set sounds fine, but your old phpBB gallery database will still be there, your old YouTube Gallery database will still be there, it's just that the fresh file set will totally ignore it

everything should work fine though :P

Your old galleries will still be there an ignored yes, so if the MOD is ported to an extension it could reuse your old data :)

Sounds promising and I'm looking forward to use one of your 3.1 styles once it's released. :D

there must be quite a few Admins wondering whether to just start a clean sheet come 3.1.0 or keep going with the old historical database - which could be huge if a gallery has been used for years

I myself am thinking this over, maybe it would be better to just leave all the old stuff, could be an opportunity but then, certain old members will probably get in a stew over it, will be an interesting new phase anyhow
