ok I have this working now. Lets jsut say if you really want you urls to look like this then it's up to you but this will not help your raking in anyway.

The long of it is that the whole internet does not support utf-8 or unicode urls. The best you can hope for it to urlencode the url but even then only a few characters are supported from a few languages.

Now even though these characters will look nice to the eye like this for instance:

http://localhost/,'ù','ú','û','ü','ý','þ','ÿ' --vt3.html

They will look like the above when you hover your mouse over them but if you copy and past the url it will look like below.

http://localhost/-%F9-%FA-%FB-%FC-%FD-%FE-%FF--vt3.html

this is what urlencoding is.

Th bad news is that that is exactly how the url will look in google also so it will be even less readable the the way the mod currently works. If you try to simply leave the the things alone like they are without using urlencodeing the browser and the bots also will encode it for you anyway and you get this.

http://localhost/-%F9-%FA-%FB-%FC-%FD-%FE-%FF--vt3.html

which is the exact same thing as above. It only looks pretty but is horrable for functionality.

I hope this helps some and why you will never be able to get the urls the way you want untill somebody compeletely rewrites all the servers that run the entire internet.

Quick question, i just changed to your rewrite, and its awesome by the way. I used to use a rewrite that would change the links to forum1.html forum2.html....etc... What i was wondering is yahoo has some of those links spidered and when it goes to them now it will be a dead link, is their something i can do so that if the search engine hits them now it will just return it to the main index instead of a page not found?

Tell me if this will be ok. I took the old code out of the page_header and tail and put your code in. But in the .htaccess file i kept the old rewrite rules and put your about them and now all the old links still go to the correct place but the current links on the board are all rewritten with the keyword mod.

well everything seems to be working fine. old links work, new links are on the site.

well what you need to do is completely remove the old mod and use the parts from this mod for the page header and page footer.

Then in the .htaccess keep the entries for the old mod as well as the ones for this one. That way everything will start pointing to these new urls and at the same time if anybody visits using the old url's they will still goto the proper page.

Why should I use your mo then? Don't get me wrong. I dont like long URLs, I just want better ranking. That is why I working on this (the original) mod.

Its problems (not working mark as read and multiple pages) are in .htaccess, but I need some time to read apache docs and then make some experiments.

We have a proverb here in Bulgaria which says: "As the mountain doesn't go to Mohamed, Mohamed goes to the mountain". OK, guys. Good news! I finally made a 'multiple pages and mark read' fix which maybe is not the best but works for me.

Happy New Year to everyone (hey, I've been gone, give me a break for the late one).

I was just looking around, and stumbled across my old MOD, and was surprised to see that people still use it. And it looks like you've been irritated by the bugs. Well, I decided to look up the old code and found a patched version I did, which I guess I didn't post. I put it together in the proper MOD format, and here it is.

Sorry, I have no place to host it in archive format (until my site goes up next month), so you'll have to copy it from here:

GoogleBB 1.2.1 (Codename: Surprise)

.htaccess

Code: Select all

  Allow from all

I haven't tested it, but it'll probably work as I recall it did previously (anyone care to take a test drive?).

Since I'm still around, if anyone tests this and finds bug(s), let me know and I'll most likely fix them.

And just for the record, this doesn't mean I'm returning to the phpBB community to continue development. I'm fixing this mod out of courtesy for you.

As for some previous posts I noticed (I skimmed the topic)...

Someone wanted to know how to permanently redirect[/b] with mod_rewrite. It's simple, just add [R=301] to the end of the RewriteRule. It'll send the redirect with HTTP Status 301 (permanent redirect).

And for webmedic, there's no need to have special latin/international characters in a link title, it's completely useless. Searching for a string without the accents and whatnot (ie. e instead of è) will usually return the result, as Google (and other search engines, to my knowledge) compensate for those without the proper keysets to use those characters. So, basically, you can simply convert it to plain characters.

Hi Kinetix,

Good to see that you picked up working on this mod again.
I replaced the old version by the new one and it seems to work OK. Also the multipage thread problem seems to be resolved. Great.

As you may have read earlier in this thread, I hosted the 1.0.0 version on my site:
http://www.digitalvideoclub.com/downloads/googlebb.zip

I'll leave it there for a while untill this version has been tested by a couple of more people.
