Lumpy Burgertushie wrote:yes phpbb is a dynamic website. it is updated/changed every time someone posts and every time you make a new forum etc. etc. therefore, the sitemap is no longer up to date. from what I remember, google etc. require a sitemap to be kept up to date to get the benefits that they may bring for SEO. after all, SEO is really the only reason to mess with having one. ( and I am not sure if it still carries that much weight with google anyway. )

what to do? I don't know. I would suggest either not worrying about having one at all, or be prepared to update it on a regular basis depending on how often your board gets new posts etc.

Lumpy,
you do know that the sitemap is regenerated all the time, depending on the cache setting?
Not sure where did you get your strange idea / misinformation about sitemaps, but all of them what I know of also refresh. Otherwise no site would use them and google would not recommend them.

where do you get that idea? many many websites do not even have a cache. a sitemap was originally designed for static sites that rarely had any changes to the structure or had new pages etc. added.

I am not saying that is is not possible to create a way for the sitemap to be updated dynamically, if so , then that would at certainly make them more helpful with SEO.

after doing a bit of research I see that using a php or asp etc. file to create a autoupdate script for the xml file is what is being done these days.
If that is what this extension does then I apologize for putting in my two cents here.

however, without this way of keeping a sitemap on a dynamic site updated, it becomes pretty useless to have a sitemap.xml file after a while.

This script does do dynamic updating (not sure on the technical side) - the sitemap gets updated and you can set the cache period in the ACP.

Edit: For some reason I never saw the above post!

But this extension does all of that automatically 8-) When new posts/topics are made, they are added to the sitemap, and also the 'modified date' is updated, even for the particular forum that the new posts/topics are in.

It seems to work very well for me, after having kept an eye on it in google webmaster tools.

Well I won't be doing that. :|

It looks to me like you haven't even installed this extension, but just compiled your own static sitemap instead.

Hmm... Then where did you find your sitemap.xml? Does extension create it?

A little site note:

There won't be a file named sitemap.xml located in your root directory of your forum. BUT you will get it if you got to this address: http://hifikabin.me.uk/sitemap.xml
So thats why I couldn't find it. I just assumed there would be a file in the root.

Thanks

The file won't show in your hosting ;) But it is available on the web. It works perfectly.

But you say you created the sitemap yourself here...

You need to install the extension on page 1 of this topic.

You may need to delete or rename the one you made yourself, to something like sitemap-static.xml. Then try the extension again. Other than that I'm out of idea's sorry.
